Never rivetted anything before.Wanted to replace some ledger plates on a sickle mower. Harder than it looks.do you need to cut excess length off the rivet before putting the squeeze on them? I"m using a rivet anvil tool that you turn with a wrench.

I must be a clutz. The inner shoe wear plate takes 4 rivets but I can"t get the rivet tool around them. Tried the bolt and nut but clearance for the nut on the underside is inadequate.Went back to the rivets and hammering just cracked the edge off the plate.I"m about to try it without a wear plate!

If I read Brad's post right, he is wanting to install ledger plates on the guards. That takes(at least on IH mower) a rivet that is flat on the top of the head and tapers toward the rivet shaft. Insert rivet from top, drive through to bottom of guard, peen end of rivet roughly, don't worry about getting it too smooth as it will wear smooth from use. I've done this but don't think it's worth doing since the guard is usually so worn that it breaks somewhere else.

If you measure the thickness of your section and bar you should be able to buy rivets the right length so you don't have to cut them. As was mentioned some buy bolts just for sections.

Good luck with the rivit replacement for your sections on your sickle bar. Don't know if you have access to one, but the RIVIT-EZE helps make the job a little easier...well it did a long time ago the last time I replaced sections. I read now where there are bolts and nuts that people are using instead of rivits that are very good and easy to install. You may want to try these.

Brad: The typical "stick-out" of a rivet is 1.5 times its diameter for a proper head. As an example, a 1/4" rivet shoud have 3/8" of stick-out. If yours stick out more than that, you may have to trim them.
