DSL is a tool, it's what I use to to get here.
A little over a year ago I got DSL and they told me I had to have filters on all phone lines except the one the computer is on. They sent a bunch of filters but not enough. I found a filter it put in the NIB outside to filter everything and picked up DSL before that and it has worked without a hitch, About a month ago my phone quit working and the computer was still online. Short story, after troubleshooting I find that filter is bad. I disconnected the filter and hooked everything including the DSL together and guess what, phones and DSL work perfect. I contacted internet and phone tech support and they said I had to have a filter. When I told them I wasn't using one for a few weeks the both said it wouldn't work for long and I would start having trouble. The place I got that filter isn't there any longer and I can't find one anywhere. Phone and internet say they only supply filter for each line. My questions are:
1. Do or will I ever need a filter since it works good now without any?
2. How could it work without one but not permanently?
3.Where can I get another filter?

L.D.

The DSL signal works on a higher frequency than what is needed for voice communication. The plug in filter is in effect a low pass filter that only allows the lower frequncy signal to pass to your telephones. If you are a shorter distance from the telephone company office the signal is very strong, when you get towards the outer limits of DSL (18000 ft) the plug in filters actually add length to the circiut and could cause intermitant "sync". We will install "whole house" filters at the NID (network interface device" to give the DSL a straight path to the computer jack.Using the line without the filter can allow "white noise" while on the phone. Your phone company can probably install a whole house filter, but it may take some pushing to get it done.

You realy should have them for cleaner connect when a phone is picked up. The Qwest booth in the mall has a box of them left over. Check where you got your kit, of who installed it. I've got extras here, but that don't help you any.

I had a lot of trouble with losing my DSL signal. The phone company installed a dedicated line to my computer in an attempt to remedy the problem. The dedicated line allowed me to discontinue the use of filters. It didn't fix the problem . The company eventually had to switch my DSL to another line in a box down the road. Finally fixed it.They still don't know where the problem was. Still no need for filters.

Ma Bell's awful old :) Even though I live where we weren't Ma Bell until after SBC started putting the pieces back together.

They held off as long as possible upgrading the circuits right by me anticipating a major road rebuild would neccesitate running new lines any how.

Every so often my home phone would go switch over to the fax number of the local autobody shop. A call to customer service would straighten it out. Same fax number was the #4 line at the local hardware store -- just old wiring all mucked up along the decades and mixed up from the days of party lines.

I have seen the little plug in filters in Walmart and Radio Shack. The filters just isolate the high speed INTERNET signal from the lower frequency audio signals. I see no reason that if you do not have interference between the telephone and the INTERNET that you would hurt or damage any equipment. All the filters have in them are a couple of choke coils and capacitors. Click the link below for what's in a filter and there is a schematic at the bottom. Note there is a little fuse inside that was probably blown on your bad filter

My DSL works without the filter also, but I Think it has to do with interference if some one is on the phone, and on the internet you might get interference, or something to do with a storm, I dont really know, but if mine goes bad my phone company will be able to get more of them for me, just call your local phone company and see if they can get you one. GOOD LUCK!
