I use a 5 watt solar panel from Harbor Freight to maintain charge on my tractors, you may consider one of these.

If the generator is somewhere out of the way, unattended, put a timer on the charger. One of those timers like you use on a lamp when you go off on vacation. We have a float charger on a generator in a well house (community well) and the battery had a cell short out. The charger goes ape trying to charge the battery up and the thing gassed up the well house. After installing a new battery, I put a timer on so it is only on for 30 minutes a day (might be an hour, I just don't recall) and I figure if the battery goes bad again no harm will be done before it is discovered.

Yup...two melted on me and I threw the other two away. Went to Walmart and spent $17 each and bought 4...been using them for 2 years now.
