I bought a 16 spd Cummins. First hole I tried to drill in metal, the v-belt twisted/flipped and now it will not run straight.

What causes this to happen?
Belt to loose, or to tight, or is it because of a mis-alignment between the two pulleys?
Thank you SDE

Sounds like you have a problem with the fabric cords in the v-belt. Mismatched or broken cords will cause them to roll like a dog in the groove of the pulley.

You may have a bent spindle or pulley.

Thank you for the quick replies.
The belt did not appear to be too tight when I started. After it flipped, I tighten it, but it was too late by then.
I thought it should have slipped also, but it did not slip until after it flipped.
I did not want to buy a new belt until I knew why the first belt did not work.
How do you check for proper alignment? Use a straight edge across the top of the two pulleys?
Thank you again Time to head to town to buy a new one,(belt).

#1 - mis-alignment of pulleys

#2 - a pulley loose on its shaft

A loose belt should slip, but will probably not flip. -- A tight belt will probably not flip, but will put strain on the bearings/bushings.

The pulley was loose. I did not try to drill anything yet. I am optimistic about it being ok though.
Thank you SDE

POSSIBILY a bad belt, as well. If some cords break in the belt, it will always try to flip over on it's side.
