So what do you think of this. I have a relatively new Coleman generator. Maybe I have 15 hours on it. It's a few years old. It started making an awful noise. I couldn't figure out what it was. I took it apart and from what I can see it looks like the armature is hitting the field coil metal. It's like the armature is too big. I can't figure out why. The only thing I can think of is to file down the armture a little to make it clear. Anyone ever see anything like this before. Any suguestions.

Check the bearings on the generator. Sounds like one of them is worn. Seems that I heard that Coleman has this problem frequently. Do not try reducing the size of the armature. Efficiency requires a close fit. Consider replacing the bearings with some of good quality.

Here's the wierd thing. There are no bearings. The armature is just bolted to the engine output shaft. It relies on the engine bearings. There is no movement in the armature at all. I'm wondering if the field which is just a housing around the armature got knocked out of alignment.

My generator is not a Coleman and I have not used a Coleman. Your idea about the field alignment sounds very plausible. Also, does the armature still run true on the engine shaft mount?

That's what I'm checking next. I think that could be it. I'm going to pull it apart again and pull the arm from the motor. Maybe it got messed up somehow. I don't know yet how it's bolted to the engine. It's not loose but maybe it's out like you said. Once off maybe I'll see something? Who knows.
