Need a pump of some kind

I need to fill gallon milk jugs with water from a rain barrel, about 40 at one time. I've been dipping them, but this gets somewhat tedious, especially when the barrel gets low. I was wondering if I could get some kind of electric pump that I could drop a hose in the barrel and fill the jugs quickly. I've got the emties lined up in a trailer.

Just put some tee's in line with a shut off from barrel then put a plank or such down under the tee's with the jugs under tee's should fill all at once might need to be able to stop some or all seperately.

raise barrel up on blocks and use a siphon hose. They sell a neat hose with a marbel check valve built in to it, but I think it cost too much for what it is. You can weight the end of hose in barrel and put a valve on the other end of hose and only have to start water flow once.

How about an RV style (also sprayer) pump? They are 12V, and have an auto shutoff. Rig up a garden hose style pistol grip nozzle and fill your jugs. The pump will shut itself off when you close the nozzle. Should be in the $50-60 range.

They are a little slower than the bilge pumps, however. 1-3GPM range. Guess that would take a while to fill 40 gallon jugs...

As Pooh Bear said, a submersible bilge pump will do fine. I use one to change the water in a fish pond and it lifts the water. Just hook up a 12 volt battery and the hose.

I went to wally world last spring and got a 1250gph bilge pump

from the sporting goods section for $20. Been using it all summer

to fill up two 55 gallon barrels mounted on a trailer.

I tow the trailer down to the river with the 4 wheeler and fill the barrels,

then tow it back up to the garden to water the tomatoes.

a 12 volt bilge pump works good. You could hook up to your car/truck/garden tractor/atv etc. Not sure what exactly you are watering but I started out with gallon jugs too. I advanced to a 55 gallon drum with a 150 gph bilge pump on my atv and finally to a 250 gallon container with a 8 gpm agricultural pump. Next step is electricity and a well but I'm having fun for now!

If you have electricity. one of the cheap sump type pumps would be perfect. I guess even one of those cheap drill chuck pumps might work but my vote is for a cheap sump pump. Hook a hose pipe to it and drop it in the barrel and pump pump pump.
