Welder/generator won't weld

I have acquired an welder/generator which works
fine as a generator, but not as a welder. The
entire DC side is dead, the only arc possible
comes from the battery until it is run down. The
generator does not charge the battery, and the
hourmeter is dead(it's dc powered also). Before I
go to the service center (125 miles), I could use
some basic generic info. Can anyone hazard a
guess as to what the problem is? I need enough
information so that I can carry on a reasonable
conversation with the service tech. Are we
talking transformers, rectifiers, circuit
breakers, etc? I'm without a manual or a
schematic, maybe the service center has some info. Appreciate any help!!

Sounds to me that you need a new set of brushes on the commutator. Pull the end off it and look at them. If they are short in comparrison to the cage they are in, get the make and model number from it and call the company and order new ones.
Also look inside the housing and see if it has slung any solder...(been used past it's duty cycle). If the brushes are mounted with a screw, you can repair it yourself. Polish the commutator (the copper segmented diameter) with some emory cloth and a stick of wood while unit is running. If your not familiar with electrical repairs, get your local mechanic to do the above. He shouldn't charge more than twenty bucks for his part. Fred Martin, Greenfield, Ohio

Rusty, mine is a Lincoln. I have had to rely on the guys at the service-center when mine went bad.I think it was a transformer. Sounds similiar to yours. Seems like it was a little more than $100. I know this doesn't help, but it is all I can do.
