Every year, a flyer comes out announcing that there will be a two day sale. Some of the tools are Made by RYOBI, HOMELITE, RIGID, etc, but many are more of a no-name type or have the CUMMINS name on it.
There is a Auto darkening welding helmet for $50. I have seen them on sale for $90. Would this be the same quality, or what could be different? It looks the same.
A 16 speed, 3/4 hp. drill press from Grizzly is about $225, but this one is $160. Again is this about the same quality or is the Cummins name mean that it is cheaper quality?
Thank you STEVE

Cummins tool sale is basically Harbor freight tools. Even the "name brand" tools are warranty returns. If your going to use them one time they're fine, but don't expect to be handing these down to your grand children. In short they're junk. Dan.

Those cheap, auto-darkening helmets usually have very small openings to see through. If you're ok with that, you might get some use out of it. A lot of cheap helmets will flash you when tig welding, but work ok with mig or stick. Don't know why.

Seen and bought better quality stuff at Harbor Freight if that tells you anything. You have to look, inspect and mostly take a gamble buying any foreign made tools. If it's too cheap you'll get what you paid for most likely. Few things I bought at Cummins sales like air hoses, RB Dewalt grinder and pry bars were okay but I've never really put pry bars to a real test yet either but the impact sockets and drill bits from them were total waste of money!

I remember seeing some rolling top work stands- the kind that you can set next to a saw and roll the lumber across to the saw- really cheap in a flyer. When I got down there, the "angle iron" construction was actually bent sheet metal to look like angle iron. Vowed to never waste any fuel to check out that chinese junk again.

Can't recommend anything electrical. Their 4" grinders lasted about 20 minutes for me and a ryobi recon grinder didn't work out of the box. Once they're out of town it's tough to return anything. Good luck! joe in ny

SDE: As JoeK mentioned, it's the same imported (usually China) stuff as Harbor Freight, Northern Tool, Grizzly, etc. sell, and no better or worse. In general, I've had better luck with warranty replacements and general product knowledge at Cummins than I have at Homier or Harbor Freight, but the Cummins shows (at least here in NY) tend to have a smaller selection to choose from. If you've dabbled with the China stuff you probably know the drill--most is adequate for the purpose if you don't expect to use it daily and don't mind tightening the bolts the Chinese forgot to tighten and doing a few tweaks. I tend to shy away from safety-related stuff like jack stands, lift straps and the like, or at least take their rated capacities with a grain of salt. The name-brand stuff they sell is factory reconditioned and/or discontinued tools, most of which have the factory warranty.

Several of those sales come here a few times a year. A few years ago, I used to buy a few of their loss leaders, like the 19 cent packs of jeweler's screwdrivers. Sorry quality, but at 19 cents a set, they can be useful. The last few sales I walked through, I saw that they are going up on most prices, and way down on the quality of most merchandise.. I never spend real money on the junk they sell...

Hi Davis,

I'd have to agree with benny2. One year I bought four 4-1/2" angle grinders when the Cummins roadshow came through. Two were $10 each, and two were supposedly superior units---all steel gears, needle bearings, etc.---at $20 ea. The cheaper ones, although gutless, held up okay but the better ones weren't better. Bad switches, burned up brushes right away, things like that. Even if they had still been under warranty when I couldn't fix them anymore I don't know how cost effective it would be to go to the time and expense of mailing a tool to a service center. I probably wouldn't deal with Harbor Freight through the mail for the same reason. But there's a H/F retail store a short drive from where I live and I've learned enough to know that I have to use a H/F product hard as soon as I get it to find out if it's any good. I once took back 9" angle grinders one after another (always when I had business on that side of town) until the H/F manager suggested that I might be happier with a Milwaukee---which they didn't sell.

I'm a believer in H/F auto-darkening welding helmets, though. I wear out about one a year, but at $50 or less each, I figure that I can go through 5 or 6 for the price of a Speedglas or Optrel, or similar. A high quality helmet ought to last longer than that, but it won't if it gets stolen or destroyed. Those things happen too.

All the best, Stan

Most is junk!!!Re: Cummins Industrial Tools Sale in reply to SDE, 09-13-2007 19:24:42
I bought some stuff from them, The chicom POS stuff is pure JUNK! Dont buy it! Looks good but fails in use fast! The Name brand stuff is OK. I was just using yesterday for the first time a pickle fork ball joint tool the handle broke off with little or no pressure, the weld had been ground so much there was nothing left. More serious I had a jack stand 6000 lb rated one collapse under my 1T Chev. The welds failed on it and the truck fell on the ground. Lots of pretty paint but PURE dangerous junk! A shovel with the yellow fiberglass handle broke the first time used. Wooden glue clamps had bad screw threads! Stretch rubber tarp pulls broke soon. I have some Good Year ones 20 years old still holding! One jack I got there wont pump! DON'T BUY THIS JUNK!!!!

Cummins is a discount tool seller. The RYOBI, HOMELITE, RIGID, etc, tools are factory reconditioned, not new,but usually carry a 1yr warranty.Probably not a bad deal. The Cummins branded tools are built offshore for Cummins by the same builder outfit types as build Homier,Harbor Freight,Tool Shop and other imported brands. Some are adequate, some are not of much quality. The other unbranded tools and merchandise sold are generally wholesale imports.Dealing with the roadshows like Cummins,Homier etc is a matter of sorting the good from the junk as you look and handle it..
