After reading the post below about a breaker acting up I began wondering if I could have a similar problem with a kitchen light. I have a recessed ceiling fixture with a 75 watt flood bulb. The old bulb blew and I replaced it with another. When it is turned on it lights up ok for a few minutes but then goes out, after a few more minutes it comes back on and stays on a few minutes and goes out. I'm not sure what the problem is and just don't use the light much. I think it is a temperature thing but where do I look for the problem. Other items on the same breaker are not affected.

My house has 30+ ceiling can lights. Half of them would heat up, shut off and then restart just like your problem description. Rather then have the builder pull back the insulation around the can, I installed florescent bulbs and the problem disappeared and I saved monies on reduced electricity usage.

Yep, can lights sometimes have a thermal shunt, when they get hot, they shut themselves down so they don't cause a fire up in your celing.

Neighbor lady had the same problem. Her husband and sons couldn't fix anything. I looked at the socket, reached in with a needle nose plier and pulled the center contact point up a bit. Screwed the bulb back in and it came on and stayed on.

We have a 4 bulb fixture under a fan. One of the bulbs acted just the way you describe. After much checking, testing, changing bulbs and frustration, I discovered that the power connection to center contact under the bulb was slightly loose on the far side of the socket, somwhat carboned up, and was making intermittent contact. Replaced the socket and it was fixed. So far, have replaced 3 of the 4 with same problem, and am pretty sure the 4th will act up soon. Hope this helps.

Phil, there should be a label or a tag on the fixture somewhere telling you the type of lamp to use and the maxium wattage allowed. You have to be a little careful of the fixtures with insulation above them as they can be heat traps and cause trouble. The other thing to check is your wire nuts in the fixture, make sure they are made up tight and make good contact.

Try a 40 or 60 watt lamp. 75 may be too much heat for the thermal protector. And you want the thermal protector because an insulated (and older ones couldn't stand any insulation) recessed can is a fire starter.

I had the same problem with new construction recessed fixtures in my house. There is a thermal cut-off device built in to them. If you use the wrong style of bulb or too high wattage, it gets too hot a the sensor and cuts off, then when it cools, it cuts back on, only to repeat when it warms up. Use bulbs specifically designed for these type fixtures, they are readily available.

Don't forget the simple things like try another bulb. It is not unheard of to get a new bad bulb. While changing the bulb be sure to look at the inside of the socket for corrosion or burnt spots in the socket or loose connections. I have found some of the China made bulbs today that do not make good contact in the socket.

If other loads on that same branch circuit n its breaker dont act the same, then I dont see the circuit breaker as the problem. Its not hard or rocket science to drop the light fixture down and remove n check n reattach any lil twist wire/bug nuts that may have been used to wire the light fixture. Then Id check the switch that serves it cuz its contacts may be loose or worn or carboned up causing the problem. You could hot wire by pass the switch a while n see if the light works okay then I reckon..... . Probably a bad switch or a poor fixture wiring connection either of which is cheap n easy to fix.
