NH 273 baler not tying 1 out of 10 bales

I am "test driving" a NH 273 baler prior to purchase and it doesnt tie about 1 in 10 bales. The twine seems to get tied to the knotter. After a bale or 3 it starts tying again.

I dont have a manual nor does the owner and I would rather not buy one unless I buy the baler.

This is my first time baling hay so I dont have a clue where to start trouble shooting.

Any suggestions?

We have 273 on the left knotter we have to run it with no sping pressure on the bill hook, we run it with the nut just up against it,if you run it by the book the twine will not release. It has been this way for years.

My JD 24T started missing the other day. The twine on the missed side was shorter than the tied side. The book diagnosed it as the twine disc too loose, letting the twine slip out. It was right. All it took was 1/3 turn on the adjustment bolt.

A friend literally gave me one of these because it drove him bonkers with broken needles and mistied bales. After I got it, I put in new needles, then carefully went through every adjustment in the operator's manual in the required sequence. It mistied one bale in the next 3,000 or so. So I'd recommend taking a day or half a day and carefully making all the adjustments IN SEQUENCE.

We have a 1 year old NH570 with the same problem. New last year and worked great the first 10,000 bales... missed 'bout 1 in 1000. After that it was a sudden jump to missing 1 in 10 for the next 10,000. Had the dealer out 3 times (Louis Gelder and Sons in Michigan) and they took it to their shop at least twice and still couldn't fix it. Finally took it to Wyatt Farm Center and they said the 570's had a problem with the whole knotter frame and had changed out at least 4 others and cured the problem so the did ours under warranty. This year started ok then the other side suddenly snapped the entire frame so Wyatt replaced it too. Not sure if NH was gonna warranty that one but haven't gotten a bill yet. Then just last week it was missing 1 in 10 again on the original side so they came out and played with it, seems ok for now. Now, when we first took it to Wyatt they wanted to know how old it was and how many bales went through it cause EVERYTHING was so wore. Huge wear patterns on all the knotter parts and needles. Boy were they surprised to hear it was only a year old and only had about 20,000 bales through it. NH will be sick of us by the time this thing is actually ready to be called wore out!

Thanks guys. The baler was sitting for years unused before this summer. I used up the old twine and another roll of new twine with no change.

I will order a manual and get things adjusted. I might have some bargaining power with it in this condition.

Another question-

Should I remove all the bales from the baler for storage over winter? It will be in a shed.

I leave the bales in the baler,read the manual about 10 times'you will see something new each time you read it,Bob.

If only one side is not tying,unbolt both and tip them up comparing the nontying with the side that tie's,Bob.

First of all you need a manual. The 273 is an
excellent baler and if in shape hardly misses a
bale. As Dave said-so many things. The twine needs
to be dry,threaded properly,and have enough tension. We made many service calls on just those
issues. The needles need to be adjusted as the
knotter parts. The manual will cover all this. If
the baler has been sitting for a long time,the
problem may be surface corrosion. If it is missing
one in ten, it is probably something very evident.
If both sides I would suspect the twine. Chuck

look closely at the twine knives.make sure they are sharp. if the knots are missed usually on one side it could be from a burr on the knife.this will also cause the twine to wrap up around the bail hook.start there,good luck

baler knotters are really quite simple ,,,,as long as you've used & worked on lots of them . but if you're new to them , you are prob'ly best off to buy one that is presently working good (or buy it & hire a competant baler mechanic to go thru the knotters & other relative adjustments / parts) - there are simply too many adjustments &/or possable worn parts that need to ALL be up to snuff at the same time to tie properly ..... .if there is someone out there that can tell you how to make it tie via an e-mail , my opinion would be that he would have to be a genuine "genius" (+++) !
