OT: Best gun to shoot coyotes

Here is what you need to get those varmits :-)

In GA the laws are fairly lax about firearms in autos and things like that. Biggest problem is the game wardens that sometimes think that a 22 pistol under the seat is a deer hunting weapon. I don't think there are any more crimes here with guns than elsewhere, in fact the city of Kennesaw, GA REQUIRES you own a gun and know how to use it.

We have coyotes here too, some nearby. I have lost a couple of my outdoor cats, I suspect they wandered into the cow pasture next door and the coyotes got them. They really get to snarling at night. My cats control the rabbits, squirrels and mice, don't need help from some coyotes. Story goes they were imported by the state game and fish to control the deer population. Didn't work, now we are overrun with both deer and coyotes and state don't know anything about it. They are not native to GA.

I keep an SKS ready for them but haven't used it yet. Around here you don't want a shot to go far, I would think a 9mm carbine or a 44 mag carbine would be best.

I'm too big for factory gun stocks. I need about 3" additional trigger pull to fit right for warm to cool weather shooting.

I saw one close to the house one evening. He was on his way back from an attempt at the cottontail who lives under my tractor and eats my little walnut seedlings off in the winter.

My dad hunted wolves and foxes all his life but as he got older he used to sneak out to the barn to watch the little coyotes born under the back shed. He never lost a sheep to them.

I never tried to long range, say over 100 yards with a .30-.30 or .32 special in a Win. model '94, good in brush and short range, always wondered how far you could effectively and consistently shoot that round, every household had one of those for whitetail deer, working man's deer rifle, sure fed a lot of families.

Being more familiar with the traditional rounds, .270, .223 would be ideal in the flat shooting department, but that .17 is really impressive, was hitting crab apples off the top of the target board at 100 yds, not sure what the zero on that one is, but one right after the other, nice tight groups, not the same wallop as the others but the hunting .17 rounds placed appropriately ought to do the job.

Yesterday we tested out a new Savage tactical .308, heavy barrel, 20" barrel, 1 in 10" twist, not sure of the number of grooves, BSA 6-24 x 40mm scope, with just with regular military ball ammo, it's a tack driver, 2 stage adjustable trigger takes some getting used to, crab apples on top of the target board at 100yds and some very tight groups, next time will be out to 200 yds, shoots like that .17 did, which was a pleasure to shoot.
