Is there a product for coating the inside of compressor tanks?

Would Rustoleum work?

I used grey POR-15 on mine. I cleaned the inside realy well, thinned down the POR just a bit, then poured it in, rotating the tank around to coat all of it. Worked well, dries as hard as a rock.

Question on testing with a grease gun? Do you put water in the grease gun, will it develope that much pressure with water? Never done this before but need to.

I took my new tank in along with my new car and they sprayed the inside with Texaco grease undercoating. That was twenty years ago so don't know if it did any good yet.

Nothing. Just drain it, don't let water sit at the bottom. If it's gummed up with sludge and carbon, you can pressure wash the inside but don't try to paint it. If you suspect that it's worn out - hydro-pressure test it.

Hydro pressure test?

----- -- Is this how? ----- --

Fill with water, then use a grease fitting and a good pressure gauge - pump it to 50% greater pressure than what you'll use?

I read something like that in the acrhives. Is that what you mean? Thanks- mud

I read everything I could in the archives. I think I'll test the tank using the water & grease gun method and only go 50% above the pressure relief valve rating.

See if a rental outfit has a Baker hand water pump for hydro-testing. A porta-power pump, with oil, will work also with water in the tank. The tank should have a max. pressure listed on the stamp on the tank if it was a certified tank. I'd test it just a little above the highest it will ever go, maybe 150 psi or so. If the tank is getting worn more pressure might cause a problem but it should be replaced if it's that bad. When hydro-testing put a good shut off valve after the pump and leave it under pressure for an hour or more and see if the gauge goes down after time. You could also test it with another compressor but hydrotesting is considered safer. Dave
