Need Craftsman Chainsaw part???

I have a 20 year old Craftsman chainsaw that has a fuel tank with stripped threads (fuel cap). Sears says the part (fuel tank) is obsolete. I believe this is a poulan saw with a craftsman label. Does anyone have a way to cross the part numbers?

The saw is Craftsman model # 358.356091 if that helps.

The first 3 didgets of a Sears model number designates the manufacture. the rest is the manufacture's model #. You are right most of their chainsaws are Poulan some however are Homelite. Sears only makes catalogues.

A friend bought a new Craftsman chain saw and the extended warrenty. Sears has rebuilt the saw so many times it is shameful. Nothing short of boat anchor junk they are selling.

Go to the link and plug-in your saw's model nr. Looks like fuel tank assembly is $31.55???

Lefty, I just bought a Kenmore washing machine part last month that had a red p/n. Part came direct from Frigidaire not Sears.

"NOTE: Some of the part numbers may be listed in RED. This part is an original equipment manufacturer substitution and may be different in appearance but is an authorized substitution."

358. does cross to Poulan as the supplier.You may also check with a Husquvarna,McCullogh,or Weedeater dealer if handy as all these"Chainsaw Co.s are affiliated as subsidiarys of Electrolux Intl.

From my many years of experience with Sears, I have found that in MANY cases the company who made the Sears item made it to Sears specifications. Their parts won't fit. I have found this on their stoves, refrigerators, tools, washing machines, dryers, etc. May be different with chain saw.

My only connection is with Craftsman Air Compressors. In 1977 the only difference between Craftsman and Montgomery Ward and John Deere and Campbell Hausfeld compressors was paint and decals. They even went in the same boxes with different stencils.

Send me an email. I have an old Poulan that I wore out and would cost more to fix than it is worth. It's about 12 years old and is a model 2400. I'm headed home this weekend and it's possible that it will work. I'm not sure just how the part numbers will cross over or if the tanks will interchange.
