I was reading down below about those that have been fabricating things for around their place. Have any of you ever fabricated a batwing mower before? I am thinking on taking this kind of project on if I can find the right gearboxes to use. How about finish mowers?

I agree witht he other poster. The amount of money you would spend in metal and gearboxes could instead buy you a working unit. To build one.. you will need 3-4 gear boxes.. metal for decking and hitch 3 hyd cyls plus plumbing, tail wheels/hubs.. etc..

Around here you can buy used batwings that are working for 2000-3000$ You can get ratty ones that work for 1500-2000$ and you can get working ones that need TLC from 500+

I bought this JD 1517... it's a 98 model.. worked it's entire life on a horse farm clipping pasture. It had a few warts and some welds, and needed tlc.. but worked when i picked it up. The link in the message is the before.. and the pic is the after.

I put maybee 150$ of parts/materials into refurbing it.. plus a few weekends of sweat equity.

it's a great mower.. I paid 2000$.. even had 1 new hearbox on it, and near new blades.. maybeee 1 cut on them..

Dieselrider, WHY????? There are too many of them out there that can be bought cheap. Old ROW mower crew rejects. The frame work is all there just need some TLC , or you could put 3 new gearboxes and a divider box for good measure and you are good to go. you get the idea!
I am not saying it can't be done, just too much libility if that thimg comes apart on you or someone else. Saw one advertised the other day, 15 ft Rhino batwing, ad said all it needed was a outer gearbox, his price was $500. I belice this was in the Austin, Texas Craigslist,,,Farm/ranch section, a week or so back. Go looking around. JMO!
Later,
John A.
