Jeep hard to start

I have a 91 Jeep that is hard to start. If I engauge the starter and continue to crank, it will not start. If I enguage the starter and turn the engine over a few times stop then reingauge the starter it starts amost imediately. Any body got any suggestions?

i have a 94 that was giving me trouble just gave it a tune up plugs wires cap and rotor and dumped a bottle of that injector cleaner in the gas tank and then it was fine. untill i tore up the second transmission now it sits. i will get to it when i get the time and money maybe this winter.

I use a "MotorVac " injector machine .It by passes fuel tank , hooks into fuel rail. Then runs a cleaning solvent through the vehicle while it is running . Cleans injectors very well, also helps clean some of the carbon off the back of intake valves. Best cleaning system I have used . We usually get $ 90- 100 to clean injectors & throttle body . There have been several things that cause long crank time on these. Check fuel Pressure and volume Plugs,wires, and coil Clean Injectors and throttle plate Check crank sensor , I believe they updated these Wiring harness to crank sensor , there was a bulletin on this sometime ago , rubbing through and shorting crank signal

Try this.
When you get in to the vehicle, turn the ignition key only to the ignition position and do not crank the engine.
Leave in the ign position for say 5 seconds then turn it off for 5 seconds Do the process 3 times before trying to start the vehicle.

If it starts good everytime you do this process then the fuel rail pressure is dropping for some reason I think. Get back to us with the results

10-4 a common problem with heeps, check valve is bad in the pump, fuel drains back, system has to b re primed. Learn to cycle or replace the pump.

I had a '90 and a '97, my dad has a '97, my brother a '95 and '96, and sister-in-law a '98. Every one of them does exactly like you describe. My '97 did it since it was new.

How recently did you replace sparkplugs and wires,fuel filter etc. My 94 jeep 4.0 had a tendency to burn the coil - distributor wire. It started hard and when I discovered the problem I could hardly believe it would run at all with a wire that bad. I went to a better grade of ignition wires.

the fuel pump in the tank is set to run only so long at start up. cranking once and then again resets the timer and lets it run for a second time and build enough pressure in the fuel rail allowing it to start.

might be a plugged filter or pump going bad. I have a couple of vehicles that have this ailment. It is just something I live with.
