I installed a new presser switch and gage because the old switch ruptured sow I know these are good. The problem is the Well will cutoff at 30psi when not using water but when we start to use it the well drops to cut on presser (15psi) and slowly drops to below 10psi and never recovers. What could be the problem?

Well is about 20 feet deep
2 inch pipe I think
pump is 60’s vintage

Hi Rod,

Since you just replaced the PS, I'd suspect some tape or pipe dope in the bellows tube, the sensing tube of the switch. If not that then you need to check for additional problems.

A drop in pump pressure is usually caused by a suction leak. Do you have a in-line check valve installed?

Check the line to the pressure switch and be sure it is clear. I"ve had mine plug with rust and do strange things.

Just turn the nut in the center of the switch down, this will increase the cut in and cut out pressure.

Larry is wrong because if the foot valve was messed up in would not shut off at all.

Hope this helps.

Jim

footvalve is on suction side Pump would come on when pressure drops but prime would be lost and not pump. You have a screw to set kickoff pressure and a different one to turn pump on. Most switches are pretty standard. I allaways have a gauge to set mine

When in use the presser drops to 10psi and the pump never shuts off.

The pressure switch will have TWO adjustments one for max (cut off) pressure (large nut on Square D sw. And the differential (difference between turn off and turn on). Sounds like the max pressure isn't high enough. Usually about 50 psi or more and turn on 30 psi or more depending on pump and setup.

Sounds like you have a jet type pump with a bad foot valve. You will need to pull the pump and the in well pipes to reach the valve.

I have a check valve in the pumps intake line right beside the pump.Foot valve in the well is ng.The spring in check valves gives out so put a new stainless spring in the valve. The pump will reach full pressure and shut off.You can hear the water rushing back down the well if the check valve or foot valve is the problem. You may have to drop the shut off pressure to 35 lb when the water level is low in the well.Better make sure you have the new switch wired right.
