need to get trailer brakes working

I have a gooseneck trailer that I bought a couple of years ago. The previous owner said the trailer brakes don't work and are not repairable. The trailer has tandem axles with dual wheels on each. The front axle has brake drums on all four wheels and has a hydraulic break line to each. All lines come to a tee in the middle of the trailer. From there one single line disappears into a large piece of tube steel that runs from the axles to the front of the trailer. I can't find anywhere that it comes back out. I see there has been a lot of welding and cutting under the trailer and I think the tube is enclosed with the end of the brake line somewhere in it. But I can tap into the tee so I'm in good shape as far as getting hydraulic pressure to the drums. My question is what do I need to do now to get the brakes working? I will inspect the drums and brake mechanisms but how do I actuate the brakes with this one brake line? I need a master cylinder or something and then I have to apply pressure to it. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I just bought 2 backing plates and they had the shoes on them for about 100 bucks, brand new. the larger sizes are probably more, but my insurance agent said if I needed bigger ones to let him know.

You definately need to go with the elec/hydr. We have 2 new Corn Pro Goosenecks, and I believe this will be industry standard in time. You can get everything needed to convert yours over from the following contact. You can tell him Steve Dean or Marvin Bixler gave you his info. He is one of the largest Corn Pro dealers in Midwest. He can get everything you need including pump and truck controller to fit any brand trailer. He will probably just need your axle and hub info.

Any local welding shops there do trailer repair? They are probably dealers for Redline or others and could pull a drum off so they could look and see if backing plates could be changed out to electric maybe.

Russ, More than likely your trailer had vaccum over hydraulic brakes. A vaccuum Booster similar to the ones used on 2 ton trucks with a master cylinder mounted on it was mounted somewhere on the trailer. You then ran two vaccuum lines to a control unit in the truck. If you are using a diesel tow vehicle you might have to install a vacuum pump on the truck. Redline used to sell a complete kit for this. Redneck trailer sales also used to sell them. Its been a while since I worked on one. If you dont have any of the parts it will be fairly expensive to fix. Weldin man

Thanks Weldin Man. I pull it now with a 1981 F350 flatbed. I use it to pull my JD450C crawler around the farm. I want to be able to pull on the road safely so I'm looking in to fixing the brakes. Sounds like I might come out better selling my trailer and getting one with good electric brakes.

It probably had surge brakes at one time. I personally haven't seen how they were done on goose necks. If that was the case frankly I don't think they are worth the time to repair. Your safety would be better served to change to electric or electric /hydraulic.

Thanks for the reply. I believe the previous owner told me that this trailer had been converted to a goosneck so it could be pulled with a standard pickup. I don't know anything about surge brakes but it sounds like from what you're saying they can't be used with a goosneck. Can I reuse my drums and just add the electric actuated brakes to them? Then I suppose I only need a controller at the truck?
Thanks

I think you can put electric brakes on it by buying the backer plates and the rest of the stuff out to and probably including the drums. Some trailers only have them on one axel but it's much better to have them on both. We have them on both axels and with the controler turned up it will yank the truck backwards pretty darned good. I like that when in heavy traffic.

Yep, electric over hydraulic and a controller in the truck. They work good too!!
