Went to do a little sand blasting and noticed the compressor (T30 Ingersol Rand)would not start. It is 220 and thru the breaker. Reset the breaker and heard a sound like motor trying to start, then breaker tripped again. Any ideas how to check this problem out? Motor out or something else. Would like to get an idea of how to find out the cause so I can get it fixed.

Try checking the start capacitor. If'N it looks ok in the little RED spot on the top of the Capicator (generally if'N the cap. is blown, the little red spot will blowo out.) Then apply a little lubrication on the centrifugal start switch that is located on the motor shaft. (Sometimes the start switch will hang-up because it got dry). You probably fixed the motor.

Assume its 220 volt single phase. Is it a capacitor start motor? If so, a bad starting capacitor will give exactly the symptoms you descripe. The motor will sit & hum until it trips the breaker. They're known to go bad for no apparent reason. Replacements are in the $10 - $20 range from any electric motor dealer or repair shop. They're also easy to find on the internet, just make sure you match the capacitance value & voltage.

After seeing that the moter will turn without belt there is a relief valve on the compresser charge line which inables it to start even with air in tank. Make sure that is working.

A friend gave me a compressor that did the same thing and I fixed it by bending the start switch contacts a little so they would close again for startup.

As the other guy says remove the belt and see in it will start up on it own. If it doesn't try to spin it a little in the right direction and if it spins up then most likely the start cap. has gone bad on you. $10 to replace it if thats the problem

Remove the belt(s) and make sure the motor is turning freely by hand, as a start. If it does, energize it and see if if runs without a load. Also, check voltage to make sure you've got full voltage on BOTH leads.

Also make sure the pump didn't setup.

I have the vertical tank type. There is a fitting on the opposite side of the tank, from the air outlet, has to do with the pressure relief valve, for starting. With no air in tank, i disassembled that part, and found it all gummed up with dirt and goo! I cleaned it out well and it runs again up to full pressure. I have to do that occasionally, for it to operate properly.
