I have access to an old Sears 6" jointer. Can anyone tell me what size/HP motor to use? also what size belt pulley?

My Grizzly 10" has a 3" Head Pully and a 220 Volt Single Phase ,1 1/2 H.P. Leeson Motor and I feel it is over powered. Yours probably would perform O.K. with a 2" Head Pully and a 1 H.P. 120 Volt Single Phase Motor[ I like Leeson's]. Check out the Segmented Drive Belts available at Rockler and others. I have changed my entire shop over to them.No more bouncing of sitting idle belts now. My 35 year old Table Saw now is like a new Kid on the block. Smart and a little show offy. LOL Jc.

The pulley on the jointer is small in order to keep the profile low for "planing" wider boards with the fence removed. And small to drive the cutters faster. In cold weather, the stiff V-belt is really difficult to start and get up to speed. A capacitor-start motor with higher horse power will help with this. Use at least 1 HP.

I've run a 6" for years on an old 3/4 hp 220 motor. The original bearings went out of the cutting head because I was spinning it too fast, so I'd say it's better to keep the speed down to the recommended level.

Another 6" had a 1 hp 220 on it.

My 8" uses a 3 hp motor a friend gave me. It's never short of power for heavy cutting, but a smaller motor would do the job.

I think it has a 1hp motor on it. Could run it with less.

A lot depends on how many blades it has.

What you are looking for is about 8000 cuts per minute.

For 2 blades you want 4000rpm on the cutter head.

For 3 blades you want about 2700rpm.

To get 4000rpm from a 1750rpm motor use a 4.5 inch pulley

on the motor and put a 2 inch pulley on the cutter head.

A 5 inch pulley would be even better if the bearing will take the speed.

More cuts per minute means a smoother finish.

I have one of those. It has a 1/3 hp motor with a 4L belt. 4L is 1/2" wide on the back side.
