reseeding hay field

hi i would like to start reseeding my hay fields like 2 or 3 acers a year with a mixture for cows/horses what time of the year should and what mixture should i plant . thanks RICK

Alfalfa doesn"t come up well in fields with even a little existing alfalfa seeding present.

You forgot to mention the most important detail.
What is in the field now? If it's fescue you may as well spray with roundup at least twice. Or spray once and then put a row crop in it for a year. You have to kill out the damned fescue.

if you work the soil and can cover the seed you will get better results, I"ve seen decent results overseeding and running discs crossways over the field

depends on what equipment you have and how much $ you want to spend

frost seeding after snow comes off is best for me, getting fresh seed that time of year can be awkward

My self I do a lot of frost/snow seeding. I go out just as it starts to snow late in the winter and spread my seed out. Saves $$ on equipment and seems to work well. I do that a lot with clover but have also done it with a pasture mix

Depends on your location.

Early spring before green stuff comes up is good, but you will battle weeds and heavier rains that wash the soil some. Might be good to plant a bu/acre of oats as a cover crop.

Mif fall, giving it 6 weeks or more be4 first freeze also works good. Less weeds most of the time.

Basically mid summer does not work, too hot & too dry in most locations most years. This assumes you are planting a cool season grass/ clover mix.
