Planted my potatoes like you said on top of the ground and covered with some of my brother's old rotten straw. Don't know if it was the year or the method but the best crop I've ever had.They're laying on top of the ground or just under the surface. Good thing because the ground is as hard as a rock. Now how to store them, we've tore out all our storm cellars.

We just put them in old fertilizer sacks 35 years ago and set them in the basement of the house then would just knock the sprouts off once in awhile now dad keeps them in his cooler outside at about 38 degrees.

We just spread ours out so as not too touch each other in a shady place under low bushes around potato patch.

Yep been planting them that way for years and each year I have them running out of my ears. I also have the same problem of how to store them. Right now I have one fridge with the draw full of tatos and I haven't even tried to pull them other then what had came to the top. Oh by the way if you can add sand to the area you will get twice as many or at least I did
