Any one happen to know the size and pitch of the thread on the AC idler pulley (the one to pull it off the compressor shaft)? The earlier ones are 5/8-11 but this one is larger (about 1 1/8") and could be metric. Thanks,

Chester

Am relieved to know it is not a tapered shaft. The problem is a noisey bearing. Will proceed as you have outlined and advise if any problems arise. Thanks again for all your help.

Take center nut off / if outer clutch won't slip off use small screwdrivers to pry off. You then need offset snap ring pliers to remove pulley. remove the felt seal as its bad about getting pulled into the seal. This a C171 compressor and is used by ford also

Don't doubt your instructions. but would like to clarify something. I have a compressor from a '79 Volare wagon and the center of the idler pulley was tapped 5/8-11 (after removing a 5/16" fine thd bolt and washer covering the pulley thds), after making a tool from a 3" dia washer with three 1/4" studs protruding to match the holes in the pulley, it pulled off (with the help of a 5/8" bolt) a keyed tapered shaft leaving the magnetic section of the clutch on the compressor.

This one looks like the same setup (without the similar three 1/4" holes in the pulley) but with a small bolt recessed in the pulley hole. Guess my real question is, what is the purpose of those 7/8"(?) threads in the pulley? Do we not have a tapered shaft here also? Whenever I see those tapered shafts I think of those Mopar rear axle drums prior to the mid fifties and the muscle needed to get them to move.

Please tell me me it really is an easy slip off operation as you suggest. I really appreciate your help. I live in a big city (Toronto) and the days of running around to the back door of a knowledgable garage to talk to some one are long gone.

Sorry I'm at home don't know the tool # but I don't use it.The tool is 2 part/ outer threads into hub/ screw in center presses against shaft. It's not a tapered shaft like the V2 rotating mass clutch.Just remove nut and see how tight it is/next ? what are you doing? bad bearing/ seal ?
