belt sander belts breaking

I have a porter cable belt sander that always worked great until I lent it to someone and when I got it back the belts will break (at the seam) after running about 10-15 seconds. The only adjustment that I can see is the tracking of the belt and I have made sure that it is straight. The belts will snap if I am sanding or just running it in the air. What am I missing? It has to be something very simple. Thanks so much for your help.

One belt manufacturer says that the adhesive begins to weaken after about one year.

Hi

Some belt sanding belts have a arrow on them and they need to go the correct direction

Hi mwkellner,

Not long ago someone on this forum said they'd had fair luck repairing sanding belts that had come apart at the seam using the kind of strapping tape that has longitudinal fibers in it. You might want to check the archives to see if there are any other suggestions.

All the best, Stan

I had that problem on a different make of belt sander... It turned out that the "shoe", a very thin metal flap on the bottom of the sander that lets the belt glide over it, had worn away and began scraping the belt from the underside. I don't know if that's your problem or not, but I felt it was worth mentioning

New belts or ones you lent the fellow? If they're ones that went out with the machine, I'd bet they've been damaged by moisture.

Had a box of belts like that once.

I'll second Bill's statement about moisture damaged belts BTDT.

Otherwise I would be looking for a burr or something under the belt that is cutting them.

These belts were from two different packs that had never been used, BUT were several years old. maybe the adhesive was weakened with time? Thanks
