Question about a model 212-17 Quincy Compressor

I read about 648 posts about quicny on here and you guys know your stuff. Wondered if you could give your two cents on a few things. I bought this model 212 quincy it has manual unloaders on it. and a 1.5 horse 220 volt motor runing 1200 rpm. at like 9.6 cfm . 2cyl single stage It came with a 30 gallon tank, can I use a bigger one? The guy I bought it from said the check valve needed work. the head seems to get pretty hot after a few mins is this normal? theres a round looking thing plumbed in between the head and the tank is that the check valve? Any way I can check to make sure its getting enough oil on everything? It was running at like 500 rpm and up to 120 psi, I changed the motor pully and bumped it up to 1200 rpm and when it hits like 80 psi it stops the motor cold (well very hot) Do I need a bigger motor? to pull the rpm? And finally the manual unloader setup. Not 100% sure what to do with this. Can i put like a pressure switch on it with an unloader valve built in and not worry about the manual unloader setup?

Any thoughts would be appreciated

According to Quincy this model should run between 600 and 1200 rpm without a problem. It is the spec on it. There is no auto unloader on it. When it turns off there is no hissing. When you try and turn the pulley after it shuts off it's got full pressure on the head still. It wont free spin. Thats why I was worried about it.

That 600-1200 range is speced for different size motors, I'm guessing 1.5 hp - 600, 3hp -1200. As you can see 1.5 horse motor will not pull that pump at 1200 rpm under load. Drop the rpm and get an unloader pronto if you want that motor to live.
Easiest way to unload - pressure switch with a needle valve unloader. If you are going to replace the check valve, make sure the new one has a 1/8 side port and plumb a line from there to the pressure switch.

You are trying to make it into something it is not. Engineers designed it, and they probably got the pulley sizes right to start with.

Compressors do get hot, the head will be too hot to touch after running thru one or two cycles.

All compressors have a manual over-pressure relief. The compressor should unload the head at each shutdown, automatically, using a line from the check valve or the head, to the pressure switch. If you don't have an automatic unloader, its likely someone installed a pressure switch (a well switch possibly) that does not have provisions for a manual unloader. I've never seen a compressor with just a manual unloader and no provisions for some sort of automatic unloading of the head, either via the pressure switch (usually on small compressors) or possibly a centrifugal unloader (usually on larger stationary units).

1.Drop the RPM back to original.
2.SAE 30wt none detergent oil.
3.The check valve is between the pump and tank.
4. Compressors generate heat as you described.
5. 30gal is about right for the pump/motor you have.
You have a single stage pump so 120psi is pretty much it's limit. A bigger motor would help but don't try to turn the pump to fast.
