I need some advise on my 2003 Chevrolet 1500 pick up with 4.8 engine. The truck has 90000 miles on it and has run great until yesterday. When you start it cold it sounds like the oil pump has quit working !! The top end rattles and knocks like its going to come thru the hood !! It clears up in about 20 seconds. I"ve searched the internet and I see alot of complaints about the GM engine knock, but my truck did not do this for the first 90000 miles, why would it start now ? Any help would be appreciated. thanks

What kind of oil do you use? Usually, at least in the 4.3 engine, Mobil One 10W30 or 5W30 will stop the piston slap at start up. I drove a GMC 4.3 from new 1990 until 2002, used Mobil One 5W30, no piston slap. Sold it to good neighbor, who had piston slap within 2 months. Has him switch it back to Mobil One, piston slap gone. We have a 93 Sub urban that has rattled at startup for 248K miles and no change. Does it for about 30 seconds and is over with till next startup.

It's called piston slap, and it's the result of excessive clearance between the piston and cylinder wall. If your engine isn't burning oil, don't worry about it. Be happy that it took 90K for it to start making noise. GM tightened up the clearance on the '03 models, which is probably why your truck did not have the problem until now.

Google on "chevy piston slap" for more info.

I have a 2000 with the 4.8 and 170000miles on it. It has done this pretty much since 37000miles. It does sound like oil pressure but according to my gage, it is not. No problems have shown up due to this. I do drive slowly until the sound goes away. I have heard that it is due to the block and thermal expansion. I doubt that this is true because it is the same block that has always been in the truck. Chevy will not give me a straight answer. My truck starts quiet and then after a few seconds starts the knock. Almost like the oil pump looses it's prime or gets air in it for a few seconds. Sometimes there is no knock. There is no reason to this. Old oil, new oil, hot, cold, different brands of oil, it doesn't seem to matter.
