Sears had a craftsman, 5 drawer tool chest on closeout yesterday for $89.00. It is two piece with the bottom on rollers. It is not the fanciest or heaviest, but better than what I had, which was nothing. It is plenty good enough for the casual mechanic. Might want to check it out at your local sears.

I have two tool boxes - the one I like the best says Montgomery wards on it. It was my Dads and I used tools out of it for years. The second one is a JD that I bought from a mechanic that needed the money - it is bigger than the MW but Ii like the MW best. My son has a bigger Snap On inline with these boxes - It is nice but OOOOOHHHH SOOOOO Expensive.

Gene,

I catch the 89.00 5 drawer ones on sale and use them for generic storage under workbenches, etc. I have 6 of them without the wheels under a 16' long work bench/horizontal storage system (aka pile... have you ever noticed how any horizontal surface will attract junk. I've probably got 40 feet of workspace in my shop and most of it is just storing crap !!)

Since I don't open these cabinets very often the ball bearing slides are not that important. They are really good for keeping those seldom used meters, tools, stuff stored away dust free. I've used the wheels for these on several other projects.

Sounds like a good buy. Unfortunately, most newer tools are either too expensive for my budget or made with that crappy chinese steel. Personally, I get all of my tools from yard sales, thrift stores, Craig's list, etc. I get some really nice old tools at a good price and they work so nicely! They just don't make them like they use to...

I bought a better grade Craftsman tool chest bottom box, with caster wheels, many years ago! 5 drawers, and a flat top. I am still using it in my home shop, although i used it at my place of employment for many years. I can"t remember how long ago i bought it new, but its been a long time! If you buy the better grade of tool boxes, you should get many years out of them, i think. Of course, having a tool box with "Snap-on" on the front will get ya many points with your customers. And, if you get caught up in the "better than yours" rat-race, you can always fill that fancy box with Craftsman tools. I still use my Craftsman tools in my garage work. I bought them 40-50 years ago, and they still turn bolts that the expensive types will slip off!

I put the thing together after I posted this. It is pretty flimsy. I was in KC visiting my son today and he has the better Craftsman box with the ball bearings in the drawer supports. It is a much better box ( why is it the kids often end up with better stuff than dad?). I am already planning on saving my $$ to buy a better one and relegate this current on to lesser duties. You do get what you pay for.
