Black residue on cement

What can be used to remove the black residue on older cement? I have installed new sidewalks, but the older cement stoop has these black marks (from age) on it and I would like to clean it up so it closer matches the new cement. I know muriatic acid will etch the concrete and lighten it up, but then it gives an uneven appearance and also gives the concrete a rougher texture. Is there a commercial product on the market made to clean up this condition?

Worked in a full service gas station many years ago, we kept our drive clean by putting floor dry down and then scrubing with short piece of 2 X 6 mounted on a broom handle. Not the easist method but works well!

Patio was like that. I did a good job of cleaning it up with a power washer only. Some bleach would probably help.

I use straight bleach out of a garden sprayer and just let it dry out on it's own. Some spots require a second application.

Go to the hardware store and get some TSP (Tri-sodium phosphate) Mix up a five gallon bucket full using the recommended rate of TSP. Then add regular bleach. I think about a half cup of bleach per gallon. Look on the jug for the right amount for general cleaning. The TSP will etch glass so dont splash on glass doors. You can scrub with a coarse bristle brush on a handle. I would wet the area first, scrub with the cleaner mix, then high pressure wash if you have one. Most of that black is mold which the bleach will take care of and the TSP will do the rest.

Do you have a masonry supply place nearby? That is one place to check for masonry cleaning products. There are other products out there and don't forget they can be diluted. The finished texture depends on the existing condition of the concrete now, and it sounds like you are honing in on a desired effect, best thing you can do in an attempt to achieve that is do a mock-up, small area adjacent to the new and see what it does. If you have a rough finish on the old, and aggregate is exposed, you'll want to use some care.

There is a product sold in hardware stores that removes oil stains from concrete, dont know the name. Also I have used plaster, (in dry powder form) and dumped in on the stain mixed with gasoline to whiten up the oil stain-just rub it in. You may be able to try this on a small spot to see if it will work.
