GM tilt steering column....help!

who here has expierence with tightening 80"s GM tilt column"s. as of tonight i have it down to the turn signal switch. but i hear that im going to need a special tool for some pins that are deeper in. somebody has to have some tricks for these?. its a 1987 buick electra

get the little tool for the pins, cheapest thing I ever got from snap-on(under $10)and use loctite on those little torx bolts or you will be doing it again in a few months....

The pivot pins are tapped, IIRC, 8-32.

If you have a small slide-hammer dent puller, you can replace it's self-tapping screw with an 8-32 screw, and pull the pins with it, and also use it to pound them back in at reassembly time.

Before pulling the pins, tilt the column "up", and then remove the heavy spring at the bottom by using a big Phuillips screwdriver inserted into the square hole in it's retainer, then turning CCW 1/4TH of a turn.

You'll need a "Torx" (star) socket to tighten the four little bolts, once you get all the way down there.

There's lots of stuff that will fall apart, and be confusing to put back in place, but, let me tell you, it gets easier after you do it a dozen times, or so!

You're going to need the pivot pin puller.Part stores carry these at a not too bad price.

Also,you will need the lock-plate compressor to get that snap ring back on.You know which one I'm talkin' about.Without the compressor,your fingers will be leaking.

Pay attention to the dimmer actuator at left side as you pull the large column collar off.Kinda tricky getting it back on the first couple times.Good luck..... ~brad

Yea, what he said,

The plate compressor thing realy helps, and the pins can be pulled with the 99cent slide hammer with a srew put in the end.

Heck the first time I made a puller out of a screw, nut, and washer pulling the pin through a 1/2 or 9/16 nut.

If it's been done a couple times the pins will be looser and might need a slight beit of locktite to keep em in place.
