What kind of signs have you seen in people's shops and on their tool boxes that tactfully tell a person that the owner does not loan their tools out? Funny, cute, or to the point, anything.
Thanks

I have a sign in my shop that says No tools loaned, and one of those Snap on stickers that says I own the best, please don't ask to borrow. People still ask.

Only 2 friends that I would borrow tools to, as they also loan to me. Otherwise, I go with the tools.

I have a car trailer, & have had numerous requests to borrow it. Fortunately I live in Minnesota, and farm trailers do not need a licence. But only the trailer owner actively farming can use it, plus it has to have an ag-related load on it (commodities or supplies). This has saved me from ever loaning it out. As much as I'd like to licence it for some odd jobs of my own, works well this way. :)

My sign reads:

Few things are as precious
To us in this life
As the tools of our trade
And the dear little wife
So if you don't ask
To borrow my tools
I will not ask
To borrow you wife.

I'm not so tactful and after having a high number of requests for loans of tools, I had the sign lady make me one that 36" x 48" with large print that reads,

"I DO NOT LOAN TOOLS BUT YOU ARE WELCOME TO RENT THEM:

1- TWO FORMS OF PICTURE ID REQUIRED.
2- $200 NON-REFUNDABLE DEPOSIT REQUIRED ON EACH ITEM.
3- HOURLY RENT $100 PER TOOL (MIN. 5 HOURS ON ALL TOOLS PAID IN ADVANCE).
4- DAILY RENT $1000 PER TOOL PER 24 HOURS (MIN 7 DAYS PAID IN ADVANCE).
5- CASH ONLY."

This has prevented anyone else from even asking to barrow anything and I have yet to have anyone ask for a rental form.

I do make exceptions for people I know will either return the tool or replace it should something happen to it. I work closely with the heavy equipment dealer down the street and we are always swapping tools from each other and neither of us has yet to have any problems.

got one on mine-- these tools were bought with union negotiated wages-- if you are not a member, keep your hands OFF.. That keep the supervisor out of it!!

Had a somewhat grouchy old uncle who was a tool and die maker and hated when others would ask to borrow a tool. His response was always "Do like I do...BUY 'EM"!!!!

cruder, but saw one once that said: I won't ask to borrow your hunting dog, your shotgun, your bass boat or your 4x4, so don't ask to borrow my tools. John in Ne.

"Tool rental deposit is twice the price of the tool, no exceptions"

The old-timer (auto mechanic) that had the sign said no one ever asked to borrow a tool!
