Cleaning aluminum fascia

Our old house has the original interlocking steel shingles covered with galvanized paint. Below the roof are aluminum fascia boards installed about thirty years ago. They show considerable black staining from drips from above. It's time to spruce up the exterior prior to putting it onto the market.

Anyone know of a magic chemical to help clean the fascia?

Thanks,

Rod

Hydroflouric acid works well on iron oxide as well as carbon based residues. It is available at brick dealers. It is used to clean buildings. It will etch glass if allowed to remain on surface. Can't remember what it does to aluminum. Shurclean is one brand name. I could give you some if you were nearby in Massachusetts.

I believe that these are iron oxide stains, so the question is what the acid will do to the white aluminum fascia, assuming that I can keep the residue off the bricks.

Thanks for the tip,

Rod

Uh, that stuff"s kinda dangerous. Wilkipedia said that 2% skin exposure (about the area of a foot) would likely produce death. Maybe it would be better to take off the old fascia and put new stuff up....

My family says I"m a hazard with varnish, let alone a very corrosive acid one storey up.

I have used hundreds of gallons of it. It is sold as a dilute acid and is further diluted prior to application. I have cleaned several dozen historic brick or stone buildings. It was part of my business that was principally engaged in industrial surface preparation (sandblasting).

Reactivity with aluminum escapes me at the moment. Aluminum was not used on old buildings. Reactivity with copper is mild. In fact, it takes several applications to remove the green patina.

Yes, I think it is safe to say that a trained professional should be hired. However, it is for sale to anyone. No training certificate or license required.

Would muratic acid do the job or be safer? Thats what the truckers use to clean up aluminum gas tanks. It's also great to wash down an aluminum boat before painting. Really good for that.

No chemicals, I just used a pressure washer. Works great, and you can do the siding while you're at it.

Bleach is an excellent suggestion. Had some Black Mold in my garage behind some shelves and after looking it up online, saw that Hydrogen Peroxide, and Alcohol also killed it. they gave the concentrations, along with the Bleach one. Worked great for me, got rid of it.

Start with the good ole bleach to kill all that mold. Rinse with a hose. Maybe all you need to do.
