Miller bobcat or Lincoln Ranger

I'm currently in the market for a portable welder/generator. I've looked at the Miller Bobcats and Lincoln Rangers. I'm kinda partial to the Miller name as all my welding equipment is Miller. I've also looked at the Lincoln lines which are quality units also but not quite as pricey. The guy that services my welders and plasma cutters recommends I stay away from the lincoln units , especially the older Ranger units due to dynamic balance problems with the generator rotor which tends to cause the unit to self distruct. I can buy a new Miller Bobcat off fleabay for 3 grand delivered, but would really like to find a decent used unit that hasn't been abused (and is less money).

we've got a millermatic 210, miller plasma cutter and old lincoln buzzbox style in the shop and a lincoln gas powered portable all work good by i prefer the wire welder over the stick whenever the repair can be made in the shop and the gas powered unit makes a good portable generator for on the site repairs or maintenance actually the gas unit sat for over a year and i went the other day and fired it right up with out much problem good tough old welder my thoughts good luck Ryne

ive got four miller welders and a plasma cuttter. i wouldnt own anything else. millermatic 250. miilermatic 180, shopmaster 300, blue star 185dx,spectrum 700. just sold a bobcat 225 that was ten years old and stll worked and started great. ive ran everthing over the last 20 years and miller has always done a good job. i agree not to buy at ebay, and get something local for a better price.

millermatics are good welders for you're garage at home, or intermitant use. the duty cycle is pretty low, though. the syncrowave 350's & 500's are top of the line power sources, though.
miller went in to buisness at a time when lincoln only made mg welders, and folks without 3 phase power couldn't have a good welder. it's a shame those old mg welders are a thing of the past, nothing comes close.

Don't overlook the Hobart..Aren't they made by Miller?? I've had super luck with my Hobarts..The "old" one is on my service truck , about 1962 I think..Runs flawlessly all day long..Thaws water lines quickly..However it's a DC machine only..Jeep Industrial engine purrs with a Ford tractor muffler on it..The other is a Hobart Iron Man 250 mig welder..A wire burnin' fool.....

we run lincoln 600 & 800 amp mg's, and 600 amp idealarcs. never heard of any problems with a lincoln, even when they are 50 years old.
on the other hand, nothing wrong with a miller bobcat. what do you plan on welding? what procces?

Miller bobcat is my choice. Why do you want to buy through EBay? Local dealer here can beat that price, and then you have good local support. Tom

I talked to the company that I buy my gases from, they quoted me $3020 for a new Miller Bobcat. I would have to travel approx a 200 mile round trip to get it and pay 8 1/2% sales tax. If I buy off Fleabay, it's $3000 delivered to my door. I use primarily TIG process in my stainless business and use a Synchrowave or Econotig in the shop. I would like to add a multi process portable for jobs I turned down in the past, plus I would like to have the 10,000 watt generator available as we are prone to frequent power outages especially if it snows, rains hard or the wind blows.

If you"re planning on doing tig look into a trailblazer or similar. They are better equipped to do tig. Lincoln makes good machines as well.

My son and I just got back from North East Pa. with a trailer mounted Hobart G-3010 300 amp welder/generator. Nice older unit, runs sweet and welds real nice. We plugged a big old Craftsman welder into the 50 Amp 220 outlet and I ran a 200 amp bead with that welder and the generator hardly flinched. and the same with the on board welder. So for any critical TIG work I may have to do portably, I can always take my Syncrowave or Econotig along. I'll post a picture once it's day light here. Bought this off Fleabay.

The Miller designs have been around for many years and are proven. However I have a friend that bought a new Lincoln Ranger 305 that he is really happy with. It's a little higher end than a bobcat and more comparable to a Miller trailblazer but he says he can burn 1/4 rods on a hot pipe where the trailblazer doesn't quite have enough heat. We have a bobcat at work that seems to work pretty good. It's a 97 I think with a 16 HP Onan. The Miller legends are a good machine if you mostly want it for welding. Dave
