Here's a shot I took last night of the 24x32 pole building I'm putting up. I have a few more 2x12's to put up, have to drill and bolt them, then Sunday we are putting up trusses.

Looks good! Have you thought about adding a 36" man-door beside the large door? Sure is handy for getting in and out.

I had to much the holes out twice between the inspection and getting the concrete in them. They were 18' around, 38" deep due to the codes here. That was a lot of fun!

I usually ignore typos, but in this instance I can't figure out what you're saying.

Good looking building, and it looks like a really fun project. I envy you. Let me know if you need about 25 cu yds of useless crap to help fill up the new space you're creating.

I meant to say "muck," sometimes my fingers get ahead of my brain. After I had the holes inspected, it rained, had to dig the muck out of the holes for the concrete pour. Before I could get it done, it rained again, leaving 8-10 inches of muck in each hole. I learned the term "mucking" from working on homes down in Biloxi, Ms. after Katrina.

Thanks. Actually, by the time I'd finished my message I'd already figured out what you meant. It helped that I finally noticed that you'd typed "holes" where I was reading "poles." That's one of the reasons I ignore typos---sometimes they only exist between my eye and my brain.

Great pic. I always love to see how other people put stuff together. I've got plans drawn up for my 36 x 72 x10 PB and am working on clearing the site. How many hours and how many people did it take to get to the point in the pix? It looks like the tree limbs are hanging pretty low. Are you going to do some trimming?

Me and a buddy dug the holes in one whole day, tok about 3 hours to set the posts, took me and another buddy about 4 hours to set level on the posts and put up the skirt boards and the first two rows of 2x6. Took me about two days to do the rest of the 2x6 by myself, then me and the wife did all of the 2x12 uptop yesterday evening (she's tougher than she looks). I'm going to do a bit of tree trimming, but I do like to clear as little as possible so it looks like the building belongs there.

I'm going to show this post to my wife. She thinks (as the rest of the family does) that I'm the only guy who has his wife helping out with the brush-mowing, tree-cutting, wood-chipping, trench-digging, barn building, etc. I tell her it's cheaper exercise than belonging to a gym. LOL. Out of curiosity, how did you set the posts? There are lots of opinions on methods, but I'm leaning toward a pad of poured concrete at the bottom, then backfill with gravel.

Code where I live has the holes 38" down, 18" wide, with a poured concrete pad 8" thick at the bottom, backfil is your choice. I used a heavy gravel/sand mix I had lying around, copacted tightly. You never want to use concrete against the poles as it will promote rotting of the posts, even treated ones. My wife works on our property as much as I do. She is in charge of burning brush, taking care of flower beds ad helping me when I need it. She even mowed the lawn last night while my dad and I were working on the building. The other night, she was up on the building with me putting up some pretty heavy 2x12, 16'. I set up a little shelf on her end so she did not have to hold it up for so long.

I agree about not pouring concrete around the posts. BTDT on some fence posts. The concrete ends up cracking at the corners and moving away from the post, making it loose, in addition to holding moisture right next to it. Very considerate of you regarding the shelf. When I got quotes for the PB material, I also got a quote from a guy with a crew to put it up. Wife thought it would be the best $4500 we ever spent. But I know I couldn't stand around watching someone else have all the fun. Now she's lobbying me to hire someone on the side to at least "help" us put it up. I'm planning to buy her a tool belt for Christmas this year. Her reaction will tell me a lot about the makeup of the labor pool on the PB project. Be sure to post back with pix as you go along.
