Have an Onan generator in a 78 motor home. Sat for 2 years, now it will noly start if you put gas or starting fuid i carb. Ablied a vacum pump to fuel line from tank and can pull fuel. an"t find a manual, can anyone help.

Got it running! sprayed the carb through teh intake with carb cleaner. Upend the full line at the exit of the fuel pump a few times and used the tube on the carb cleaner to spary cleaner into the line. The used a squirt oil can to put some new fuel in carb intake. Fired it up and used the oil can (with gas in it) to keep it running. Did this for a few minutes and then it would run by it slef as long as I ran it at a high RPM. Lots of black somle from time to time, think it may have bben carbon. Still not running perfect but will even run at low rpm now. Am going to get some fuel additive to refreshen the gas, had stabil in it, but is a couple of years old. Also am goin to add some carb cleaner to the fuel and then run it again for awhile. THe engine on the motor home is running fine on the same fuel (Dodge 440). Only probelm (Motorhome engine) is smoke coming off of exhaust pipe. Must be leaking oil somewhere, need to find and fix that and I'm done.

Does not keep running, only runs long enough to burn off starting fluid.

Howdy!
Had a similar problem this spring with the roto-tiller. Took the carb apart and found a "diaphram" valve on the side of the carb stuck closed. Cleaned everything up, cut a couple of new gaskets, and put 'er all back together... started on the first pull and ran like a champ! As someone else mentioned, letting 'em sit with gas in the tank for long periods tends to gum everything up. You can buy a gas treatment called "Stabil" that will keep it from happening again. HTH!

How much gas is in the tank? Generators in motor homes are set up so the pick up tube for the generator only goes 3/4" of they way down from the top of the top of the gas tank.

I put one of their kits in my Onan from a 1973 RV. Took about an hour to put in and eliminates all of the problems associated with old fuel sitting around in a fuel tank for long periods of time. I think it was around $100.

Bill: try cleaning the carb,the fuel now can't sit very long befour it gums the carb i have used diesel fuel conditoner in other small carbs and works to let fuel through. i have an onan gen 5000 watt and have all the books for it Cummins now are the dealers and i think owners of onan so if you have a cummins engine dealer near you try them (good luck) jim

These engines have an electric fuel pump.You can run the pump before you crank the engine on mine.Nice unit, runs at 1800 rpm.I use a boat gas tank to run mine.You can put a hose in a car or truck tank and avoid hauling gas cans around.
