Milwaukee battery recall - 14.4v and 18v battery packs

Just found out two weeks ago that Milwaukee is recalling all 14.4v and 18v battery packs for cordless tools, that were made between 1999 and Feb. 2004, which is about 1 million batteries. There is a date code on the bottom of the battery pack to reference the mfg. date. The batteries can possibly explode. They are replacing the batteries made in that date range with new batteries at no charge, and shipping is free both ways. I just sent in my three batteries this week for replacement. It's a good deal for me, since the two batteries that came with my drill in 2000 no longer hold a charge, but I'm getting replacements anyway. For more info., go to:

Like Jim, you just made my day. Don't own any high priced milwaukee stuff. All my drills were made in china and their batteries seem to last forever. I just had to sound off...

Well, when I called the 800 number, they told me that I could trade my battery at a service shop too, instead of shipping. Got my new one today. Any way, when I purchased my drill in late 2004, mine was made in the Czech Republic, a co-worker got his the same time from the same supplier, and was from Germany. I wonder how long these things are on the shelf waiting for a home? Jim

last drill i picked up was from germany. might have changed, though. if i'm not mistaken, the lithium batteries are canadian.

The recall info for the NiCad batteries says they were manufactured in Mexico, but the ones that I have say they were made in Japan, so the problem involves more than one supplier. Looks like it's just a faulty design. The website says they have had 35 reported incidences of batteries exploding, with 11 of those involving injuries.
