These cleaners are a 50/50 mix of kerosene and alcohol.Make your own...

I have a 96 Mazda Protege that works just fine if I use it 3 or 4 days a week. Unfortunately, especially in the summer, I don't use the nonairconditioned car very much. But if it sits unused for a couple of weeks, something seems to gum up in the fuel system. It has trouble raising RPMs from idle, and sometimes quits when I want it to take off. It has always started right back up, but the hesitation between pushing the gas pedal and the engine gaining speed is annoying. Luckily it is a stick shift, so I can deal with it usually by waiting for the RPMs to rise quite a bit before I engage the clutch.

Adding a bottle of the Chevron fuel injection cleaner sold at Costco seems to clear up the problem in 40 or 50 miles. I suspect that the fuel filter needs changing, but I haven't gotten to it yet. Probably will take getting stranded somewhere to make me do the work! But adding the bottle of cleaner is easy and has been effective for me so far. Fairly cheap too. Good luck!

I drive a lot of short trips and I do have trouble with injectors getting gummed up. I've tried STP, Chevron, Sea Foam and others, but the one that works best for me is Lucas. If you buy the quart and measure out the amount you need at a time, it is cheaper than the others too.

I have used Sea Foam a couple times a year in all my vehicles for several years, both carberated and fuel injected. It does a good job.

What's high mileage? I have 230K on my 5.0L F-150 and never run any cleaner additive thru it. I figure each injector has passed over 1800 gallons of gas in that time.

Use Sea Foam, by far and away the best I've ever tried. I'e used Chem-12, Gum Out, STP and usually you couldn't tell the differance before and after.

Older throttle-body injectors generally don't need to be cleaned.Newer or multi-port systems have smaller pintle nozzles requiring occasional cleaning.

GM has a real good cleaner that you pour into tank.I've used it a few times with great success.
