Permanent ID on tools + warranty?

My son is leaving for vo-tech college in a few weeks and taking over $3,000 worth of hand tools with him that we have been purchasing over the past months. They will be locked in his toolbox in the school shop at night but he is bound to leave it unlocked sometimes and leave them laying around others. I would like to engrave, or otherwise (suggestions anyone?) permanently identify them to help keep them in his possession or help them find their way back if he does lose/misplace them (or get stolen). If I use one of those little electric engravers, does anyone know if it will affect the lifetime warranty on any tools, or certain brands, if you have had any experience with them? Most are SK and Craftsman but there are a few Snap-on, Matco and others.

An alternative to a vibrating engraver in reply to Brent in IA, 08-07-2007 17:46:48
Brent --

Here's another vote for marking the tools, but there's a much neater way of marking than the vibrating engraver that I would suggest. The Etch-O-Matic electro-etching system works like a charm, or you could try building a homemade varient of the Etch-O-Matic from a metal block, a couple thicknesses of felt, a piece of mimeograph stencil (although I'm not sure where you'd find a mimeograph stencil today, so maybe you'd need to buy the Etch-O-Matic stencils), a DC power supply, and an electrolite solution (saltwater works). A typewriter (another hard-to-find item today) makes the neatest stecil, but even a hand-printed stencil makes a easier-to-read mark than a vibrating engraver does.

The Etch-O-Matic markings I put on some of my own tools 40 years ago are still clearly legible.

John

The school I went to made everybody mark their tools the first few days with an engraver by a number, that way the instructor knew whos tools were whos, if they found one. chris

Mark them puppy's they have ways of growing legs when your back is turned . I worked with a guy for 17 years that you had to keep all tools locked around him . Went to his garage one time he had 4 big tool boxes full of tools . I started looking at them and half of them had my name on them I went through all the boxes and got my tools back, But had to threaten to call police and get warrant if he didn't let me have them .

My daddy was a mechanic and later the counter man in the parts department for a IH dealer in the 50's - 60's. He had a large sign above his tool box that read "Please do NOT ask to borrow my tools - that's the way I got MINE". He also marked each with his initials. Said he lost very few tools and if he was working with another mechanic it was easy to sort out the tools at the completion of a job. MARK THOSE TOOLS>

I agree. Mark them puppies. A guy in our shop had done an installation at a big automotive supplier six months ago. One of his digital calipers disappeared. He thought he may have just left them somewhere as the work area was several bays in size. He went back on a service call a couple of weeks ago and went over to the maintenance crib for something and lo and behold there was a set of Mitutoyo calipers, not unusual to see in an auto plant crib. However, these had his initials engraved on them! Once again, mark them tools!

Mark 'em. And post a FB sign on the end of the box that they are marked. You can get an ID number from your county sheriff that is easily traced.

It doesn't matter about warantee if the tool has sprouted legs and unmarked tools WILL sprout legs.
