Well, I'm getting pretty tired of working on this little car! The last thing we did was replace the radiator and cooling fan sending switch. All was fine. Then as a finishing touch I sprayed the anti-freeze dripping engine down with engine degreaser. I then wash it down with a garden hose. I had done this once before after doing mechanical work on it. However, this time upon starting it up the check engine light is on and the tach moves little to not at all. I let it sit in the garage for a week or so, hoping it would dry out/heal itself. Tonight I went out to start it and it will not start. I have not checked anything out yet. Any suggestions? I figure I'll start by removing what look like the two distributer caps, checking for moisture...

Thank you, Glenn FitzGerald

Well, Sunday morning my son and I towed it the approx. 10 miles to Auto Zone. I have to say I dealt with THE MOST helpful parts salesman I have ever met. He came out, cleaned a bunch of connections, checked out numerous wires, etc. and then scanned the computer. The test indicated a bad ignition module. We removed both coil packs and the ignition module. He tested them; the module was junk and the coils were marginal with many deep cracks in them, $250 + tax for new parts. The fellow recommended a junk yard in town, (he said I was welcome to leave the car in their parking lot over night), I called them this morning, $25 for all the parts I needed. I installed the "new" parts and it popped right off.

I probably should pick up a Haynes book but haven't yet.

Thank you for your responses.

I have been a professional mechanic for 20 years. I am ASE Master certified and Ford Master certified. My advice to you - get a scanner on it and see what code it is setting and go on with your diagnosis from there.

First, you"d be better off asking this question on www.saturnspot.com I"m also a registered user there (I have a 96 SC2).
A few responsed to some things you"ve said...
There is no distrubutor. Could you mean the two ignition coil packs? My car is an automatic trans and the ignition coil pacs are mounted to the bell housing below and to the left of the air cleaner box (if you are at the front of the car facing rearward). Personally I"d never intentionally get them wet.
When left sit for long periods, these saturns can be a little hard starting. Not sure if it"s moisture or what. It just happens.
Sometimes when it won"t start, or tries to run but dies, you can get it started by holding the gas pedal to the floor and start it. Holding the gas pedal down resets the ignition sequence. It"s hard for guys raised on carbs to do this, I know. Have you ever replaced the original head temp sensor? It"s located on the right side of the head right above the bellhousing in the center. The orignals were plastic and commonly failed. Replacements are brass housed. Also check the connecting from the wires to the connector for that sensor. Saturn makes a replacement splice in harness for that because of past problems. New temp sensor is about $10.
My last recommendation is to get a Haynes manual for that car. They always pay for themselves.
