Hi guys. Working on the daughter"s "96 taurus again and this time I need to replace a front wheel bearing/hub assembly and while in there the ball joint is loose. I am wondering if anyone has used the c-frame ball joint press from Harbor Freight. They have a small kit for around $30.00 which I will spring for if it will do the job.

I have done a lot of things but never a ball joint and I am a little leary of tackling something like this. I have been reading about replacing this and there"s lots of advice like "not advised" "must replace entire steering knuckle"

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Many auto parts stores have tools like ball joint presses that you can borrow free (you put the value of the tool as a security deposit, and get it back when you return the tool).

AutoZone is one national chain that does.

Replacing ball joint is not fun, nor particularly easy, nor particularly hard. If you are a decent home mechanic, and have the will and most of the tools, and are careful, you could do it well and safely.

It would be helpful to have a service manual (can get cheap on CD on-line) and often when dissasembling such things it helps to have a "heat wrench".

Thank you for all the good advice guys! I have been a little leary about this one and I think it will get farmed out.

This somewhat impaired shad-tree type replaced the arm and lower ball joint on 89 Tempo which may have the same engineering. The stablelizer bar complicated things enough that a 6 ft. pribar and someone to run it, made things easier. You will know if you get it right. Ford may recommend new nuts and/or bolts on some of the fasteners. Some, push the envelope with Loctite.

I am a Ford certified Master Tech with 19 years experience. Yes - Replace the whole control arm. Save your 30 bucks by not getting the El-Cheapo tool - and get the proper part for the car, or hire a GOOD mechanic to do it so you do not have to worry about the wheels falling off.

While I've not seen a '96 I have worked on my '92 Taurus and on it the lower ball joint(the only ball joint) is part of the control arm. Just remove the retaining bolt, strut rod, inner pivot bolt, remove and replace.

Don't play around with the stearing on your girls car if you are not familiar. Take it to someone experianced. Then during the time you are not working on car try and think up some way to make up that money.
