OT Ford Explorer axle leak

We have this veh. that has sat since March--looking at it there is an oil leak from the rear axle leaking onto the rim. Checked not from the brakes.
How big of a job to replace the oil seal.
Wife got the new Lincoln MKZ and this one sits for sale/
It is 4x4 not sure if that makes a difference with the axle seal.
Thanks for any help.

Check to make sure the vent isn't plugged. The outer bearing has a seal but may be weeping around the outer race of the bear where it mates with the axle housing. Clean it off and check fluid level then park on level ground to see if the leak reoccurs.

Where is the pressure relief on this rear end???
On top there is a line that looks to be electrical maybe a low oil reading gage--didn't see where there ws a vent.

There should be a hose coming of the axle somewhere, that is the vent. The electrical connector is probably for the ABS.

What year is it? Those produced after 2002 used a ridgedly mounted axle and halfshafts while those produced before '02 used the conventional axle. If before '02 and 4x4 it probably is a Limited Slip axle which requires a special synthetic lube.

It is a 1998 with 136,000 miles it goes into 4x4 when it is needed nothing to push or pull such as a button etc. great for the wife.

If it has limited slip it will require a friction modifier in addition to the recomended lube. If you don't have the modifier it won't cause a leak, the limited slip just won't last as long. They have been using synthetic for quite awhile in these rigs. They did change the spec partway thru the '02 model year (if it is an '02) due to differential problems. Check out any TSB's that sound like what you are experiencing too, dunno how much trouble you want to go thru if you are going to sell it though.

Limited slips suck. I had one installed in my explorer, and after 15000 miles, I have an open diff.

There is nothing like lockers, and i'm installing them from now on for part time/emergency use.

Personaly if I had a choice for a pavement pounder I would go for a gear style limited slip, like a Detroit TruTrac. They are considered a life of the vehicle limited slip. But that being said I will get a lock-right for my Ranger when I stumble apoun one.

Oh, I forgot that I had also had a trac-loc limited slip installed about 20,000 miles ago in a '99 ranger 2 wheel drive. Last winter, when I needed the limited slip the most, I got stuck and found one wheel spinning, with the bed empty.

I swear the slip slips when i turn the wheel by hand with it in gear.


I'm asking myself, why did I waste my money? I should have bought the full detroit locker for 385 bucks.

Yeah, if you are having one installed, the stock trac-lock isn't worth the money. The TrueTrac is a totally different animal, much like the Torson they put in the FX4 Level II Rangers.

The Powertrax Lock-Rite is the real deal. Detroit copied it and didn't get the steel quite right, the Powertrax is worth the couple extra bucks. If you have the 8.8 (Explorer or 4.0 Ranger) you can get a No-Slip which is about the same thing but smoother, and of course more expensive.

Was the axel horizontal to gravity? If not and the lowest wheel is the offender, you might just clean up the oil and park on the level for awhile.

ok, assuming you have took the drum off to see if it wasn't the brake cylinder, you will need to pop off the rear diff cover and extrude the axleshaft out of the side. (you have to remove the carrier assembly on the outside, probably taking the drum brakes and backplate all off.)

I've beat the crap out of a '92 explorer and it had 210000 miles on it, with no axle leak. i find that odd that yours is.

Rear axle problems on Ford Explorers are pretty common - especially when eqipped with the V8.
