Motor question

I've had an old attic exhaust fan sitting down in the barn for a few years and I decided to hook it up in the attic. I made a frame for it and then set it up in the workshop to try it out for a couple of hours. i just went out to check it and the motor seemed hot. It turns freely and it took right off when I plugged it in. I dont see place on it to oil. It's a 1/5 HP emerson. Could this be normal, to run hot, or should I junk it?

I would check to see if there are muddobber nests inside. It may not be coming up to speed.

If its split-phase motor, with starting winding, make sure it is coming up to speed and not still on starting winding, like if centrifugal switch is stuck.

Like Bo says, if you can hold your hand on it, its probably OK. Take your air hose and blow it out real good.

they'll run warm...if it's turning freely, and you can leave your hand on it, I'd run it. Check the motor and see if it's thermally protected. If it is, then if it's too hot, it'll just shut down...if the it's a thermal fuse, it'll just melt and you'll have fun trying to replace it. If it has a reset button or is auto reset...it'll just fire up when it cools. If it does shut down...then it is too hot.
