Please excuse my ignorance, but..... what's the difference between a flail mower and a normal, everyday brush hog type mower???

Thanks.

Paul

Flail mowers use a horizontal shaft like a rototiller with a bunch of "knives" on them. The knives (blades) are free swinging back and forth and on really good flails swing side to side as well. They aren't on a chain like a flail manure spreader but a ring that allows for the blades to deflect when hitting an obstacle like a rock or branch etc. Alamo (Mott) flails have 2 L shaped blades that will swing independantly when an object is hit. Some other flails have copied this. Flails are a much safer mower than a rotary because the grass cuttings and anything else is thrown up into the housing and then deposited straight down behind the unit. If a rotary hits an object it can not only wreck the blade or mower it can send the object out with great velocity that could seriously injure someone. Flails will work better in taller grass but are more expensive. Dave

I use a flail mower a lot, and it sure chops up the residue better compared to a bush hog. I can also cut pretty low with it. Alkay is right on in his description.

Flail mowers have small knives hooked by chains to a rotating drum. These knives are what cuts the grass as centrifugal force holds them out as the drum rotates. Rotary mowers use standard mower-type blades rotating horizontally to cut the grass. Hope this answers your question.
