Sometimes one of these may be in my shop for a long time before it is used. Typically, the thing will clog and goes in the trash. I suspect that the paint thickens in the bottom and the pickup tube gets a clog in the end- which kills it. Laying them on the side might be a choice. I thought about storing them upside down. Tried it and one can lost all the propellant. I think the valve could not seal with only the gas pressure on the valve. The paint may help the valve to seal. What have you found to work best?

Bus Driver: in addition to what Tim said, I find a few things that work well are following the shaking directions (longer is better for the most part) and removing the nozzle, twisting it 1/4 turn, and putting it back on. I also save nozzles from old cans (2-second procedure to pull it off before tossing the can in the trash, and they don't take up much room), as this is often a cause of a can not working. Call me cheap (which I take as a compliment!) but having a few spare nozzles around has saved me from having to toss many cans of "bad" spray paint and other spray-can goods. There's only a few different types of nozzles in common use, and chances are you can find one that will fit .

When I finish spraying, I turn the can upside down and push the button for a couple seconds. Long enough to flush out any paint left in the pickup tube. Cans can be stored indefinitely.

Sure we clear the nozzle after use. But often a can purchased a couple of years earlier and never used before will not spray at all. Obviously the solids settle, thus the need to agitate with the enclosed rattle ball. I think the solids block the pickup tube- which extends to the bottom so that the can really does get empty as used. I am trying some stored on the side and some upside down to avoid solids in the tube.
