Can an electic motor designed for 220v 60 hertz 3 phase be operated on 220v 50 hertz 3 phase. Motor is on a metal lathe, and drill press.

yes it will runbut slower. as nowdays they make a variable speed controls for 3 phase motors by changeing the frequency to control the RPM to run many things like pumps for GPM and feeder belts for FPM .

I do know that my inverter will output any Hz from 0.1 to 400 in increments of 0.1 Hz. So with a 60HZ input to the inverter, it could produce a 50 Hz output easily. I do not know what would be the result if the input was 50 Hz, but probably such inverters are available. I use mine to power a 3-phase vertical mill from a single phase source. I suspect that the inverter converts the incoming power to DC and then electronically makes a 3-phase output from the DC. The instruction book for mine is 183 pages and I could never memorize all the instructions for the possible programming options.

Now lets see,if you have a 3ph dual voltage motor(230/460 volt) and you change over from 230 volt to 460 volt the motor will run faster.

Had the machinists beleiving that when we ugraded the electricial in the machine shop.

Only if its rated 220 volts 50/60Hz. It will run slower on 50 and would prefer a lower voltage otherwise the magnetic core will saturate and it will draw excess current even at no load. And will run hot.

A 240 volt nameplate motor for 60 Hz would run fine on 200 volts 50 Hz. 220 volt namplate would want about 181 volts at 50 Hz. Either case the torque would be as rated but since the shaft speed is 5/6th rated, the horsepower will be 5/6 nameplate.

So it depends on the details of the motor design an construction.

I agree it should be ok. It has to be properly fused or breakered for short circuit protection. And have the proper size thermal protection from overload/high current. Many electrical uses seem to think that just the breaker or fuse in the panel is all the electrical protection required. We assume this application is in Europe, Aisa, eastern Japan or South/Central America to have 50hz? The Sir Adam Beck power plant at Niagra Falls just removed the three remaining 25hz turbines a couple of years ago.

American Heritage Invention and Technology magazine, several years ago, featured a plant in Buffalo, NY, that still used 25 hz motors. Supposedly some law requred the elect company to provide the proper voltage/hz or pay to change the plant over. Apparently the power company saw it easier to just continue to make the 25 hz power for the company.

60 cycle just makes sense, since minutes, hours, seconds, etc are in mutiples of 60, clocks, etc are easy to make that operate on 60 hz. 50 cycle just never seemed right to me. Large aircraft use 115V/400hz but that is for a special reason, and not something you are distributing across power grids.

Didn't know Sir Adam Beck ever operated 25 hz generators. Were they for railway/streetcar traction, or ????

25 hz is still made and used by the railroads. The mainline corridor from Washington DC to New York and west from Philly to Harrisburg is 25 hz. Maybe some farther than that, but I don't know for sure. We still have two 25 hz hydro turbines and a 60 to 25 hz rotating frequency converter. Only ones left on the system as far as I know.

There used to be a lot of industry around here on 25 hz, but that was all changed over years ago.

Traction is likely, the dam at Keokuck, Iowa may still have some on 25 Hz. One use I saw there was in arc furnaces in a carborundum factory. But I've not checked that in about 20 years.

25hz loads were in the Dafasco & Stelco steel mills in Hamilton Ontario. The Steel rolling mills used DC motors powered from DC converted from AC in motor generator sets. Until a few years ago it was easier & cheaper to control very large variable speed/torque DC motor drives vs. large variable AC drives. A 25hz line also ran to the Bucanon switchyard in south east London Ontario. There a 25/60hz MG set converted surplus 25hz to 60hz. Or supplied 25Hz from 60Hz should the lines or Sir Adam Beck 1 go down. Sir Adam Beck 1 has had the units updated with the latest and greatest turbine, scroll case and generator designs. Power output has been much increased. In fact most of the hydro electric plats are getting re-fitted for more power from the same water flow. There is a new water diversion tunnel being added to supply Beck plants 1 & 2 from the Niagria River upstream from the fall. The plants at the falls have been shut down as the water drop is less than if the water is taken from the Niagara river then diverted miles downstream of the falls. There was 25Hz industry loads on the American side but the last I heard the utilities were pushing hard to eliminate the duplication of services. Apparently 25 cycle flicker can be seen on incandescent lamps and 25hz fluorescents are just nasty. Drove past the falls a couple of times few weeks ago on the way to the NY Expo held at Canadaugia. Still a spectacular sight no matter how many times we see it. The Maid of the Mist ride is a must.

That's all very interesting stuff. I had no idea that any utilities in North America produced anything other than 60 Hz power (excepting DC transmission lines).

Regarding generation at the Falls, I read once that when the first Tesla-designed (Westinghouse) generators were installed there, they tried to operate them at 50 cycles, but the generators wouldn't work right. The utility told Tesla that his generators were no good, and he responded by saying "I designed them to work at 60 cycles per second, not 50." The utility sped up the generators to humor Tesla, and sure enough the generators worked as designed at the higher speed. And that is supposedly why North America is on 60 Hertz while most of the rest of the world uses 50 Hz power.

There were many frqeuncies used in the US in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

16-2/3 was a handy frequency easy to generate from 50 Hz with rotating machinery as was 25 though many power plants primarily for traction used those low frequencies in their steam engine or steam turbine driven alternators. I looked through an abandoned 25 Hz plant about 35 years ago and the laminations were over 3/16" thick where 60 Hz laminations would be on the order of .015" thick or less. It wasn't rare for traction companies in the country to sell power at their standard low frequencies to farmers along the line. I've seen a couple radios with 25 Hz power transformers that came from the factory that way. The iron core stack is over twice as tall as the normal 60 Hz power transformer. They run fine on 60 Hz.

Lots of southern California ran on 25 or 50 Hz from Boulder Dam and early sound movies had that hum frequency recorded on the sound track.

I've seen equipment made for 133 Hz and I think something in the 90s.

Lots of aircraft equipment runs at 400 Hz and higher because motors and transformers are smaller for the same power the higher the frequency. Many aircraft factory tools have been made as 120 Hz 3 phase which gives them light weight and good shaft speeds (7200 synchronous speed for a 2 pole motor) and makes them totally useless when stolen. I've seen a very sturdy double spindle shaper (essentially a couple mouted routers on a table, but with 1-1/2" shafts) with 3 phase 120 Hz motors. They were 240 volt, but ran fine at half speed on 120 volts three phase 60 Hz.

I used to have a book from the 1930s with articles collected and written by an electrical engineer of the era and one of the articles was on the question of frequency and associated history. That article I recall was published in an AIEE periodical. I wish I had that book, it may be here but I think I loaned it out and it never came back.

One of the arguments for 50 and more so for 60Hz is that our eyes don't notice flicker at those frqeuencies while at 25 Hz every body does. There are some that notice flicker, especially from fluorescent lamps at 60 Hz.

Niagra is so nice. We honeymooned there almost 6 years ago. Got a falls view Jaccuzi suite for less money than dinner in a nice restaurant. Plenty of fun stuff to do and the weather that first week of October was beautiful.
Took Amtrak from Albany across New York state to get there (it was October '01, my wife didn't want to fly) which was also alot of fun.
