It's a juggling act around here keeping everything in one piece. My son's '95 Saturn has a problem with the electric cooling fan; it is undependable. Sometimes it comes on as it should and sometimes not. I have not looked into it at all yet. Any tips?

Thank you, Glenn FitzGerald

I had a 93 Saturn with the same problems with the temp senders as others have mentioned. Replaced both several times. Also replaced the electric radiator fan twice (225k miles, so I'm not complaining). Turning on the AC does over-ride the system and turns on the fan.

The PCM grounds the control side of the fan relay to turn on the fan. The fan coolant sensor also grounds the same terminal to control the fan. If the system works with AC on, the problem is either the sendor or the wiring between the sendor and the relay.

1991 through 1995 Saturns hae two coolant senders. One for the PCM and gauge and the other for the fan control. Starting in 1996 there is only one sender and the PCM controls the fan. The lower sendor in the center of the head should go to PCM. On single cam engines the fan sensor is almost directly above the PCM sensor. On twin cam engines the fan sensor is more to the left, close to the outlet to the radiator. You can verify that you have the correct one by unhooking the wire to the PCM sendor. When disconnected the gauge should stay on cold.

There is a coolant fan relay located in the under hood fuse panel. You can swap it for either the horn or AC relay and see if the problem follows the relay.

Glenn, you said you see 2 sensors at driver's side..... replace BOTH of them with parts from the Saturn dealer.Been down this road lots of times. They came out with a better design recently.~brad

I agree with the other comments that this is a probably a controller issue. I bought a 2000 Taurus 3 years ago and the dealer replaced the controller at that time. Seems that Ford also had issues with the fan controllers.

If the controller is defective it should show up on a code scan. Auto Zone will do the scan for free and chances are that they will be one of the lowest choices for that part. Not that I am in love with Auto Zone but their free scan policy comes in really handy sometimes.

I have a 96 Saturn which I bought new. The cooling sensor has been replaced a number of times at the dealer. I was told the sensors were problematical. The fan sensor has not worked for a long time. In traffic just turn on the air conditioning and the fan will run all the time.

I'm NOT a Saturn expert. However, by that year, MOST US cars had the fan controlled by the 'puter, rather than directly by means of a temperature switch.

If that's the case with your's, a quick check with a scan tool will tell you what temperature the 'puter believes the engine is operating at, and IF the 'puter is commanding the fan(s) to be "on".

IF the 'puter is commanding the fan(s) "ON", and it's not running, you could have a bad (intermittant) fan relay or motor.

I see two "control switches" on the driver side of the head. They look the same and are both tied into the cooling fan harness. Is the top one the one I'm dealing with here? Is there also a relay?

Thanks, Glenn F.
