After spending 20+ years in the tire business I can only hope each one of you that is repairing you'r own car, light truck or medium truck tires have increased your liabillity insurance. You will need 20 to 50 million dollars for each accident. If some lawyer can cast doubt on your repair, and they will do their best to, most juries today will vote in favor of the other guy. These cases are on record. For those of you who are using plugs in high speed tires, I would hate to speculate what will happen. I still fix my own farm tires, have my own tire machine and tools, but all my car, pickup, and truck tires go to the tire shop where they have the liability for the repair.

My local Sam's Club fixes flats for free, for members.

Does take them a long time, though.

Guess they figure they'll make it up on all the stuff you'll buy while wandering around the store waiting for your car to be done.

Invest 10K in tire equipment and supplies, hire a man to do the work, set up a road side stand and mite as well sell lemonade while you are at it. Ifn you find you are not making money invest 10k more and set up a stand on the other side of town sort of a north south deal. If neither of them works then move'em to east and west, sooner or later you will find the Hot spot. I can fix my own tires and if i could not surly would not complain about the price to have it done. One job I hope I never have to B tied to izz changing or fix'n tires. Tire work is hard dirty work and a tire man works for every penny he makes.

The local tire shop I buy from repairs and rotates tire free of charge. The price for the new tires is in line with the other shops.

I just bought 3 tubes to put in my bobcat tires. The other tire already has one. It cost $110 for 3 tubes and installation. I think the tubes were about $20 and the installation was $30 a wheel. This was second place I went to. The first wanted $170! Rediculous! I had the first tire go flat and the closest place to repair it was a car dealer in a smaller town. I think it cost me about $30 total a year ago. I should have went back there. Dave

I'd be willing to bet that a lot of people who fix flats for free or a nominal fee do it to increase customer good will. Just had one done at the local Big-O, think it was $16.00.

Think about it. By the time you pull the car in, put in on the jack, take the wheel off, find the leak, de-mount the tire, fix the leak, re-mount the tire, put it back on the car, pull the car out of the shop, and do the paperwork I'll bet you've spent at least 15 minutes. At $16.00, that's a shop rate of $64.00 per hour - pretty cheap these days.

The place I go here in S. Tx charges 4 bucks, was 3 bucks last year but he raised it so he could buy a newer machine and even has a spin balance machine now too. On tubeless he breaks them down and will patch the inside. Will also plug if you want. Took a 16 inch tractor tire in, he broke it down and pulled the tube and patched it for 4 bucks. He does a lot of big truck tires but I don't know what he charges on those.

Flat tires are rare today on anything compared to 40+ years ago in the dark days of bias tires. On highway vehicles the most common tire to go flat is the passenger side rear. People that wonder on the road and get into the gravel or shoulder have plenty of flats.

I spent $12.00 on a repair ket.I've only had to use it one time, but, that one time saved me more than enough to pay for the kit.Next tire repair is free.

My wife can find a stray nail with a tire faster than anyone else I've ever known. When I put new tires on her car, I bought the unlimited road hazard warranty that includes free repair, replacement if not repairable, and free rotation/balance recommended every 6000 miles. Didn't cost me as much per tire as fixing one flat per tire would. They fixed the seventh (7th) flat on her car (nail) last week (no charge) in just over 18 months.

The reason that we patch tires vs. plugging tires is that plugging a tire can spread the cords and lead to a blow out. It does not happen very often but it does. All of our shops were told to stop doing it because of some pending law suits due to plugging tires. I do not agree with it but thats the reality.

That's cheap. I have Continental tires on my new Ford, everytime they go flat they are ruined. Two flats in two months with a vehicle with only 17K on it has costed me $245.00.

I've looked at them and given the hole size the tire place isn't screwing me over when they say they are ruined.

Just had the local shop put two good looking used tires they had on a pickup. Grand total for the tire, mounting, dismounting, balancing, and taking the rims off/on the truck was $15/each.

Even better I had a couple of 10-20 truck tires on suicide rims flat on my old flat. Took the trailer to the same guy. These where Dayton rims and one flat was an inside and one was an outside.
He charged me $20 a tire to remove from trailer, break the tire down and remount, then reinstall on trailer. Plus I needed two new tubes at $20 each. So $80 for two truck tires that knowbody else will touch.

1 no#4 boot $11.00
1 50 pound calcium $26.00

Exactly the reason I finally ordered a bead breaker, like the Cheata that Gemplers sells. Only issue is the chloride, I haven't figured out a way to pump it yet as so damn corrosive. Going to keep a tube and a scab tractor tire on hand, haul the good tire to a shop and let them boot. At least I am able to keep going on a weekend when all the tire shops are closed. Not doing any heavy tillage with tractor anymore, so don't need chloride except for loader, am thinking about just building a weight box to hook on three point I could pick up with bale fork.

The said thing here is they charge these high prices and the guy who is doing the work is probably only making minimum wage or a little more. So where is the money going? In the companies pocket. With freight prices high because of fuel we know things will increase but 45% is a bit ridiculous. His advisor must be in the oil business.

Tire bussiness is one of the most costly business to run. Before you go blame the guy mounting your tires, do it yourslef once or twice, I do all my own tire work, it is not eassy, but I am cheap, not fruga, I am tight.
pay his business insurance for a year, or his workman comp insurance for a year, around here, there are no minimum wage tire workers, most are getting 12-15.00 per hour. this stuff really gets under my skin, people complain about the high price they pay to get done what they will not or cannot do their selves. If you are going to complain becasue you think you got overcharged, go buy all the specialized tools it takes to do the job and do it yourself!!!!

I agree with most of it. But when prices go up 20-50% there is someting wrong. Used to be every January things went up a bit (tire repair from $4 to $5 now it goes from $5 to $10 etc) wages and farm products don't jump like that!

I buy my tires from Belle tire. They have repaied a number of tires for me for nothing. Just put a new tube in a front tractor tire for zip. They gave me 4 used tires for a hay wagon a few years back. Just charged me $2 @ for mounting and balancing. Good folks.

From WalMart to the Tire Dealers it's the same!
Because now they don't plug them they break it down and patch from the inside.
Plugs always work for me!

I also bought a tire changer and balancer. Probably spent too much, but I go thru a lot of tires on flint rock roads on my mail route. Was having one or two flats or low tires every week before I bought them a couple months ago. Better knock on wood somewhere, since I bought them have not had to fix any flats, just have used to install several replacement tires for ones that were shot. Funny how that works. I suppose if I get 400 miles from home will have a couple flats on the way. Anyhow, got tired of the prices going up and having to leave them one day and go back and pick up the next. Gas isn"t cheap.
