I took my o32 in for points and the dealer on his own put in the electronic ignition module. Works great and starts more easily. Ditch the points- Dave

I got an email from you and I still don't understand why there's a problem. You say you cannot get to the points to adjust with the flywheel in place, correct? Some 028s have little access plugs in the flywheel. You remove the plug, reach through, and adjust. Gap is .014 - .016" Or, set it with a timing light and dial indicator to 2.1 mm BTDC If by chance, you have a flywheel with no plugs, you will HAVE to use a light and dial indicator. You don't need special Stihl tools - but just for reference: Stihl dial indicator kit for timing - 1106 890 8700 Stihl "buzz box" light for timing - 0000 890 8905

You've got me stumped. I was a Stihl mechanic at several tractor dealerships dating back to the late 60s. I don't know about any special tool that is really needed. Points are set with a feeler gauge - nothing special about that. What Stihl DID have - was a buzz-box that allowed hooking wire leads to the points/capacitor/coil without unhooking anything - and it would buzz and also light up when turning the flywheel at the point that ignition would occur. You could do this -along with a dial-indicator screwed into the spark-plug hole to indicated piston position. So, to be very accurate - you could set timing with the point gap and/or rotating the breaker mounting plate via slotted screw-holes - and have ignition occur at a certain milimeters BTDC. All sounds fine, but new points will wear in and that will change anyway. If all you are doing is changing points, and the breaker-plate hasn't been moved, just set to the proper gap. If you want to do it via the light method - you don't need the special Stihl buzz-box (I have it, though). Any test light will work - but you'll have to unhook the capacitor and coil from the points first. You also need to find a way to hold a dial indicator in the spark-plug hole - which is not very difficult. If you want timing specs, tool part numbers, etc. - repost and I'll look them up. I have the original Stihl buzz-box, dial indicator and holder, service manuals, and all the other original service tools (but I rarely need or use them).

I had an 031 that came with points that I changed every year or two. Then my dealer sold me an electronic ignition module that I wired in and did away with the points. It really helped.
