OT-plasma vs. LCD

Well, the kids and dog were horsin around in the livingroom and the TV took a pretty good hit. It now only showes in red and green. So I'm gonna have to spring for a new one. With all Hi-def in 2009 I might as well bight the bullet and get a good one. Does any one know if one is better than the other, or if there is something else out there that has an advantage over them? About all I know is the plasma's were supposed to burn out fairly fast. Also, where is the best place to go? Best Buy, Circuit City, etc. Thanks for any help. Mike

I have a 50� Panny plasma. I went with a plasma due to the greater viewing angle. On a LCD, if you try to view out of the sweet spot the picture will blur.

For ruggedness, I think I'd go with the LCD. I work for a major defense contractor, and we've been selecting LCDs for ruggedized displays for several years now, especially in the larger sizes. Never seen a plasma that's even in the running. When it comes to way-cool technology, though, I'm fascinated by the DLP. The current crop of DLPs seem to have infant mortality problems, though, so they probably have a few years before they're a mature technology.

I have been looking to replace my CRT with a 40" HD set and have researched these a bit.

Plasma has a limited life and will degrade over time. LCD is a better choice but the contrast isn't quite as good. I have always been a Sony fan and have been looking at 2 models that they have.

The KDL-40S2010 is a 40" LCD with 720P resolution. Checking the reviews for this set most say that in this size range you can't really see the difference between 720 and 1080 resolution. This model is a closeout from Sony right now and it was down to $1350.00 a few weeks ago but back up to $1499 today. They had it at $1199.00 on Black Friday and surprisingly it was sold out. I am waiting to catch it at the same price again.

It's cousin is the KDL-40V2500 with 1080 resolution. More bells and whistles and priced several hundred more. It too is reaching a closeout point and will be cheaper soon.

Toshiba is supposed to be realy good as well as some Samsung models. I like Circuit City because their website is very helpful and has unbiased reviews. The website often has coupons that give $150.00 off if you place the order there. You can pick it up at the store. Another place to shop is Sam's Club. I can't ever get warmed up at Best Buy.

In the LCD world Samsung makes the screens for Sony and has a BETTER controller (check the contrast ratios) and is cheaper.
With Sony you pay for the name. I have a Samsung LCD computer monitor (using it right now) and its terrific.

The first questions would be do you have access to HDTV programming? If you don't have access or are not willing to pay for it then its not worth it. Also plasmas only have a life of about 5000 hours, which is even less if it isn't taken care of, some have extra issues to keep the gases from settling out. LCDs last longer but are not as good for high demand situations like video games. Both types are extremely heavy and need to be properly secured. You might also want to look into DLP (digital light projection) technology if you want to go High Definition. Lastly, you said your kids broke your current one, wouldn't you rather have them break a $300-400 regular TV the next time or a $3000-4000 TV?

I was told that if a plasma screen died you had to replace the whole deal but with a LCD the individual diodes could be replaced.

Anyone else hear this ???

I also heard that a projector screen contains fluid and it can be rejuvinated.

Urban myth ???

I have never herd of that on a LCD panel. Any LCD
that I have ever looked into you replaced the whole LCD panel. Maybe on the huge LED panels that they have now it is possible to change one LED if it fails. LCD panels are closed units as far as I have seen. My experiences have been on LCD panels in computer monitors and laptops.

In a few years LED or OLED (Orgaic Light Emitting Diodes) will eclipse LCD as the display of choice as they are brighter and do not require backlighting. Environmentaly better also

I like the SONY 40 or 46 inch XBR2 LCD 1080P HD TV. Go to the web and do a search on what the internet sites will sell you one for and then shop that price at your local dealers and see how close to it they will come.

We got a 42 inch vislo lcd from Sam's club for around 1100 dollars this spring.

I really recomend checking them out, the quality is excellent and quite a bit cheaper than the brand names at Best Buy, etc.

Regarding plasma vs lcd.....plasma screens are shiny, so any light in the room will setup glare and reflections while lcd are a matte finish, so you can use them in a room with lots of daylight and still see the picture perfectly.

I wouldn't buy a plasma due to the glare problems alone as our family room has lots of windows, therefore lots of glare on any shiny screen tv.
