To run a simple propane hand torch(Bernzomztic,Surefire etc)off a bbq tank,do I need a regulator or just the POL to appliance hose?...Same question w/lantern,stove,etc,that normally run off throwaway cans.

I was looking on EBay for a filler from a 500 gallon lpg to 20 lb tank, never did find, but saw lots of 20 lb to 1 lb or similar for sale. Maybe would be about as easy to fill several torch tanks as to adapt to a 20 lb or bigger? Just my thoughts.

think i have seen connectors to do what you ask. propane (refrigrent R 290 ) has a pressure of 109 psig @ 70* . i suspect a tiny orfice is used in place of the regulator in the torches and other like equipment .

Spoke w/my LP supplier and yes the small appliances are orifice controlled.Apparently inlet orifice is sized to prevent excess flow to the appliance. However apparently such"temporary" appliances must be "attended" while in operation and not left in "unattended operation" and tank valve"must be closed wshen unattended. He also advised that hoses/lines for such"must" be by "approved" mfg/technician with"approved materials." I did find the hose I needed at camping supply store. POL fitting to throwaway tank fitting.Works great.

Anything related to safety is not a dumb question.

Devices like you listed are all designed to be used for short periods of time with someone watching them. The pressure is regulated by the shut off valve controled by the operator.

The pressure in the propane tank can vary from zero PSI at -42 degrees to over 200 PSI if exposed to the sun. With that much change in pressure possible, anything designed to used left unattended must have a regulator.

for camping I have a "tree" that hooks to top of a 20lb tank

lantern sits up top and there are spigots on the side for hose connections to stoves etc, no regulator involved
