NEC on furnace circuit drop

I'm looking at a house which has a "new" furnace in an ordinary unfinished basement. The 120v power is by a NM cable dropped from the ceiling switch to the furnace cabinet, through a knockout to the interior junction box.

Seems like all the furnaces I've looked at have conduit from the ceiling to the furnace cabinet, or BX cable - instead of exposed NM cable.

Is this installation OK, or is this code deficient?

No way .... That wire needs to be supported at no less than 12 " from the junction box , and no less than 4-1/2' intervals in a run . Also the only way you can run it with no back boards is if the cable assembly has a minimum of 3- #8 AWG or 2- #6 AWG conductors in the assembly. The biggest violation is where a homeowner will run it across the joists in a basement with no back boards. The reason they specify the size of cable allowed to run freely across Joists , is because more than likely they will end up hanging stuff on the cable,the larger assembly should support any stuff hung on it. Clothes hangers , garden tools etc.

That installation done correctly should have a piece of pipe , (EMT) , from a junction box which houses a Fireomatic . Most tradesmen will ty-wrap the Thermostat wire to the pipe to bring to the Pony Relay. Thats not actually the proper way to do that, but its usually 24 Volts , so not a real bad violation .

A NM cable in the open, unsupported except at the top and at the furnace, in thin air, not mounted on anything, nor stapled to anything, not even laying againist anything????? ????? ? I don't think so!!!!!

NEC 334.15 thru 334.30 are applicable to this situation and expecially 334.15(C) and 334.30(B)
