Probably a stupid question

I'm converting over a 6 volt to a 12 volt system. I need the pully off the generator to use on the alternator. I'm having problems getting the bolt loosened on the generator pully. I don't have any way of holding the pully while turning the bolt. I'v tried to put it in a vise but can't get a good hold on it. I work by myself so don't have anyone to hold the pully from turning. I've also lubricated the bolt for several days to make the job easier. Do any of you guys have a suggustion.

It won't work if you do get it off .Take to local shop and have them install the rite pully .

Use a Chain Wrench to hold the Pully.

Remove the armature from the generator housing. Then you can clamp the armature in your vice.

Are you sure the pulley will fit the alternator once you get it off? most of the times the shaft is different.

I use a closed end wrench and hit it with a metal hammer.

why dont you try and get a big channel lock and hold the pully with one hand and impact or rachet the nut off?

I put a heavy glove on one hand and use that to hold the pulley. Operate the impact wrench with the other hand. Less blood spilled.

If you have an old belt that size wrap it around the pulley to hold it in place or may be you can use the belt to help the vice grip it better.

If you can't find an impact look at the end of the shaft it may be made to put an allen wrench in there to hold it. Or unbolt the gen. and pull it apart then clamp the armature in the vise.

Use a inpact wrench if you have one.If not Wrap a drive belt around pully ,hold belt in one hand put on wrench and hit with hammer in correct direction.This method has worked for me for many years.

Use an impact wrench.

If you don't have one, take the generator to a tire shop or other mechanic shop, and they'll have the nut off for you in about 7/8 of a second.
